Hi, first time poster here and engagement ring shopper. I''ve been lurking for a few weeks and doing alot of reading. I ordered a loupe and an ideal-scope and have narrowed it down to the following diamond. It scores a 1.3 on HCA, but I know GIA rounds the numbers and the report is dated June 2005. Is it unusual for the report to be so old? The stone is at a fairly high end store on Fifth Ave in NYC. It looked nice to me in the store and with the ideal-scope, but I am very new to this. Does anyone see anything to be concerned about?

Thanks for any insight you can provide. And I felt much more at ease shopping after having read this site, it''s a great resource.

Hi Mol

The diamond looks very promising. Although 2005 isn't that old in the scheme of things it would be worth asking the seller if this diamond was a trade in. I take it the seller ran a Sarin or other scan to get the proportions as 2005 is pre cut grade. Sounds like you have definitely done your homework having a loupe and IS available, well done!

Looks good to me from the numbers.

Lorelei,

Thanks, the store doesn't take trades so I would assume that it is a new stone, but I will ask to make sure (although considering the store I would be horrified if it were not new). Thinking more about this... I shouldn't have to ask this at Cartier should I?

I looked at a few larger diamonds but this 1.01 carat looked the best under the IS. Although I will admit that all the stones looked very nice.

Mol it depends, even Tiffany take trade ins so it is possible a diamond could have had many owners. However it is possible that the diamond has just taken a while to find the right home, ask the store. The diamond in question has great potential as far as can be told without images.

Lorelei thanks again, your advice makes me feel much better.

I just received an email reply confirming that the diamond is brand new.

I will try to post pics of the ring and an idealscope image if I can manage it.

Thank you!
