I am interested in a 4 prong setting and have searched these boards to learn more about the dangers of 4 prong. The setting I found seems perfect because 1) each prong looks pretty wide so it should be stable against breakage and 2) the prongs are at 12,3,6,9, thus covering the damger zone that i''ve read about.

I don''t have the stone yet, but I will insure it. In any event, I really don''t want to lose or chip a stone (since each is unique and a replacement just won''t be the same) so I want to do my best to take precautions.

Here is the link to the setting. Unfortunately there is no top down view. Do you think that this seems secure?

(if its relevant: i''m looking for a stone about 2.75ct in size, with a girdle just think enough to be strong)

Can you tell i''m a bit of a worrywart?

Wow, that is a beautiful setting from the back, but have you seen the top view? I''ll bet it''s gorgeous! You do not need to worry about 4 prongs. Many people on here including myself have them. I had one for 29 years with no problems, and I set my new stone in one for now. I think one has to be careful not to bang a ring on things regardless of how many prongs there are. But obviously a stone of value is insured, so you need to enjoy your ring and not worry about it!

Just one more thought. That setting does not look like a wedding band would sit flush, if that is important to you. Regardless, I''d still have Leon make a wedding band to match at the same time as it seems to be a common problem to have difficulty finding a wedding band to match a custom ring.

Thanks for the response.

I don''t mind if the band does not sit flush with the e-ring. I would have it made without pave, because I just want to enjoy the simple beauty of the structure (emailed Leon, he said this is fine). I''m also considering it with a pave head but plain shank.

Now that you''ve brought it up, the wedding band creates a bit of a dilemma because I want one that looks great on its own, so this rules out ones that are shaped to hug the ring. But again, a flush fit is not that important to me so maybe a straight one would work. After I buy the stone and when I''m ready to move forward with the setting, I''ll talk to Leon and see what he suggests.

I wouldn''t worry about a four prong. I would simply treat it like a six prong and the same applies...get the prongs on your ring checked twice a year.

How about wearing your wedding ring and e-ring on opposite hands, then you have a stand alone ring and also don''t have to worry about the sitting flush problem.
