We are at a very nice mountain resort this weekend and the little town has a wonderful downtown street with very high end shops. My in-laws have a house here and I have been here several times, but usually I am with other family when we go shopping. So for the first time today, my daughter and I were able to go jewelry shopping, and this could also be known as Jewelry Heaven.

There are several shops with new and consignment jewelry, and I am talking shops with 5-10 ct. diamonds, 20 carat diamond necklaces, sapphire, emerald and ruby rings fit for royalty, and everything you can think of in very fine jewelry. One was having an Elizabeth Locke trunk show, and that was a sight to behold. I am sure there was well over a million dollars of her items in high carat gold and many colors of gemstones. Whew! Amazing!

Anyway, one had a lot of beautiful diamond rings and I noticed that there were some antique settings so I looked more closely at the diamonds. I suspected that some had OEC's although it was hard to tell in the lighting. The owner wasn't there, and naturally I knew more about the jewelry than he did, but he was extremely nice to let me try on anything I wanted. So I had him pull out several antique rings for me, and as I suspected, they all had OEC's. They ranged from about 1 to 3.5 carats! Two of the 4 were beautifully cut, although one had more girdle chips than I would have been comfortable with. There was one with a beautiful 1.5 ct. stone and a mint condition setting. Had the owner been there, I might have made an offer, but I already knew from a previous price question that the guy working today wasn't able to deal on the higher priced items. We did not have a camera, but my daughter did take one picture with her Ipod of the 3+ carat diamond. We can't get it on the computer here, and I barely even have an internet connection here. Sorry for no pictures (if I go back tomorrow I might try again with my phone). But the 3 ct. diamond was in a lower color, and I still loved it! That was such a relief to realize that I have a lower color tolerance for these chunky cuts than I do for mrb's! The setting reminded me of Dreamer's new setting other than it had something like 8 prongs and not the bezel.

One reason I am writing is to say that in the smaller stones, I really couldn't look at them in the case and tell that much difference between a mrb. I felt like I understood why Dreamer, Demelza, Mara, BrightIce, and others are getting the larger OEC's, because you can see the facet patterns better in those. I will honestly say that I think I could wear a 2 ct. OEC for an engagement ring. And I am planning to look at an AVR next week to compare.

In addition, I did get to try on a 5+ ct. solitaire with baguette sides...I thought of Phoenix!!! The stone was beautifully cut but I am not sure if it was ideal cut. There were diamonds larger than that, and I could only dream of the lives of the women who had once had these pieces!!!

Sounds like a lot of fun! I wonder if you will walk away w/ something tomorrow if you can get a good deal!

Pictures are a must, please!

DS...speaking of the people who used to own these and the lives they had... I often think of that too when I see pieces. For example I think on Ruby Lane they had a 2c OEC in a stick pin from late 1800's. I remember thinking, wow a guy wearing a 2c in a stickpin on his jacket, it seems as though it's just a 'random adornment' kind of thing, oh let me put on my 2c stickpin, no biggie! Wonder what kind of jewels his wife was wearing!

I do love the larger OEC's particularly because you can see the facet patterns best, but even in a 6mm I feel as though I can see faceting pretty well, not from as far away of course but the sparkles are distinctly more chunky.

HI:

Is this a recurring theme--seeing lovely OEC's while on vacay?

I am in Palm Springs. Found a ring. I am almost sure I said, no.

cheers--Sharon

The way old stones carry themselves really does make lower colors warm, not colored. I bet you had a ball with all that lovely jewelry, reminds me of how I stumbled on MS Rau last year! :naughty:

I really haven't found anything as captivating as the faceting of a large, beautifully cut antique diamond. The romance of imagining owners of the past is the icing on top (as is knowing that MY ancestors of that time period were poor farmers and never would have owned such a luxury - makes me feel like Liz Taylor and her Krupp!).

That's actually why I kind of like the helter skelter ones like mine in smaller sizes...I mean, what patterning? :rodent: It's pretty random looking, and just a little chunky disco ball.

In larger sizes, I'd go for a stone like Mara's!

Sharon! We just got back on Wed. Ships in the night. What store did you go into? All those pawn shops along the strip, I knew there had to be some awesome OEC's lurking in there but we never made it in. The 110 degree weather just sapped all our energy.

I think I might have been in danger had that one store owner been in! His wife is sick and they have gone to the Mayo Clinic, so they will not be back before we leave on Monday. But now I know to go shopping alone anytime I come here! I spent an hour each in two of the shops! The thing about these rings is that they were very fine quality when they were new, so they were really well cut. In fact, I was very surprised at how pleasing the cuts were to someone as picky as me. I never thought I would see nice ones, but I totally forgot about the shops here.

I am sick I don't have a camera with me. My little Canon died a couple of weeks ago and I have ordered a new one. My husband brought a larger Canon and I'll see if I can figure it out and go back tomorrow.

Mara--we have been here since the 2nd--and it has been hot--even for "me". Sorry I missed you!

There is only one pawn shop I am familiar with--and have not been there in a decade--in Cathedral City; his ebay presence is Penoriss. Kick myself for not buying a sizable Demantoid there last time...... But I am sure there are things to be found if one is dilignet....

The shop I was in was on El Paseo. I need to return, in season, when they are ALL open!

cheers--Sharon

Time flies when you are having fun! As little as I know about old cuts--the ring/stones I saw were also lovely. And white!

cheers--Sharon

Just got back from shopping and unfortunately the shop with the OECs was closed. I spent a fair amount of time at the Elizabeth Locke trunk show and tried on some of the most beautiful gold jewelry I have ever seen. It is very expensive, unfortunately. It is fun seeing all of thse pieces in person. Pictures just do not do them justice!
