I need to make an offer on an engagement ring and I need your help on what a fair offer would be. These are the only stats on the ring that I have to go by. So please let me know what you think a fair offer on my behalf would be for a ring like this:

14K Yellow Gold Ring with a round solitaire diamond. The diamond is 1.05 Ct, Very Good Cut, G-H Color, and Clarity SI1-SI2.

Negotiating tactics aside, what do you guys think would be a fair price for me to pay for that ring? I understand that there are other characteristics of a stone that go into the price, but considering that all he knows is the above, what should I pay?

Thanks a lot!

It looks like somebody is guessing as to the clarity and color grade of the diamond, so the reality is that nobody can be truly accurate assisting you with an estimate. A good place to start would be to run a search for comparable diamonds here on Price Scope and use them as a jumping off point for your comparison...

Does it have a lab cert? If the clarity happened to really be I1 instead of SI1 then you are talking a HUGE drop in price. I'm guessing an SI1 would be half again as much as an I1.

Looking on Pricescope will give you an idea of actual retain offerings, and if it is a used piece your offer would be somewhat less.

Why do you phrase it "I need to offer"? Are you obligated to buy?

Hmmmmmmm G-H/SI 1-2... Are you buying a G SI 1 or a G SI 2 or an H SI 1 or an H SI 2? Or an I I 1?

Also, very good cut? By whom?

Well those statistics come from an appraisal by a local jeweler. The stone looks good, I've seen it. I can't see any inclusions and it looks to not be discolored.

All things considered, I'm banking that it's an H, SI1 with a good or very good cut.

And it is slightly used, so I'll be having it cleaned and polished.

I think we're going to settle on $1,500 for this, which is a considerable savings as far as I know.

Savings!? this sounds more like theft... not from you, from someone else. The offer is not just good, it really belongs to a different world (as in "out of THIS world") and should be left where it belongs. This price would match a honest stone either two thirds lighter or just good enough to be turned to speacilized industial usage (oil drilling, for ex., not jewelry). I sincerely hope the whole thing is a joke

$1,500??? Yikes! That's so far below a reasonable price that something seems very fishy here. Are you sure that's not a typo? Even for an estate piece, that's a shockingly low price.

A considerable savings? If it's cut at all decently, $4000 would constitute a considerable savings!

$1500?!?!?!?!?! My friend, there's an old saying that I think applies here:

"If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually IS."

LOL, well it isn't from a jeweler or anything, it's from a person just trying to get rid of it.

Hopefully you know this person well and the ring is their property. Not pilfered goods from a theft.

Okay, well that would explain it. As PQ said, we're hoping this is someone you know well enough to trust in a situation like this.

WHAT A PRICE!

Looks very much too good to be true.
$3500 would be a bargain already!!!! $1.5K would be a very good price on a J-K I 1.
If it's actually even H/SI 2 and not G-H/SI 1-2, it's already the steal of the century, providing the cut is at least acceptable!

Finchuck,
This ring sounded very familiar and when I saw your post on guessing what size the diamond was, I recognized the photos! I, too, was watching the same ring on ebay!

The ring went for $1601 and I was wondering if you got it?
