I NEED HELP!! - James Allen 6 Prong Knife Edge vs. Vatche

So I've been debating this for quite some time, and have been scouring PS, but I can't seem to make up my mind whether I would be better off keeping my JA 2mm Platinum Knife Edge Six Prong Solitaire, or switching it out for the Vatche U113. Of course, since JA doesn't sell the Vatche, this would add another level of complication and expense.

I'm just worried that if I end up "settling" for the JA setting, that it will drive me crazy and I'll end up wanting to switch it out later, and then I won't be able to return the original one.

Since I only have 30 days left of JA's generous 60 day policy, I need to make a decision relatively fast. PLEASE HELP!!

Also, if you do recommend going with the Vatche, where do you suggest I buy it??

THANK YOU!!!

Switch it out. You are obvious not happy with every aspect of the ring so switch it out now
while you wont have to pay for a wasted setting. Both those other two have nice heads on them.

Beautiful ring. I would actually go with this. It's still JA so youre not dealing with outside setting, but the quality is higher. Closer to vatche http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/18k-white-gold-six-prong-knife-edged-solitaire-engagement-ring-handmade-item-22590

Thank you Niel :D I did consider the handmade one, as well, but it's hard to know for sure since there are so few pictures that I could find of that setting IRL

I'm just afraid that I'm being silly since it is such a gorgeous ring and I love how thin the band is. Will the other settings make my diamond look smaller? I'm a size 4.5, if that makes a difference.

Oh I don't think it would look any smaller.

I used to have the JA Handmade Knife Edge setting in Plat and it was beautiful! The head is spectacular and it really looks like the Tiffany setting. The only reason I returned it was because I needed more finger coverage than a solitaire on my size 7 fingers.

Thank you for posting the pic, Laila619!

Do you happen to have any other views?

Thank you for your input. I think I will talk to JA and see if they will switch out the setting. It's only $500 more, and I'm hoping that they won't charge the extra $100 for it being 1.5 instead of 1.49 carats.

I agree with Niel -- I LOVE the JA handmade setting. The Vatche U-113 is gorgeous, but it's also more than twice the price. For all intents and purposes, they are extremely similar and will look the same. The JA's prongs are more pronounced (which I prefer) and the Vatche's prongs are a little more dainty. For the price, I'd do the JA in a hearbeat -- it looks great! :))

The knife edge on the JA will provide more stability to address your concern over the thinness of your current one, but will give the illusion of being thin (one of the reasons I love a knife edge).

Thank you so much for your reply! Huge help. Just got the go ahead from my SO...yay!!

Any advice on the height I should request they set it? I just want my K showcased to reveal her full potential  Not concerned as much about knocking my ring since I'm not too rough on my hands (desk job).

I would just have them do the standard height, as I think it looks best. :)) Exciting!

Thank you everyone! I feel so much better. I kept trying to rationalize the other setting, but it was just no good. Thank goodness for return policies...

Update: Just spoke to JA and they are waiving the additional $100 charge and I should be getting the return label in 2 days. Then the waiting game begins

I have to say, dealing with James Allen has been so easy. They are knowledgable, accommodating, and just plain pleasant. Jim, if you happen to be reading this, thank you and kudos :appl: :appl: :appl:

Thank you! Yes, great advice on going through JA directly - should be super simple.

I can't believe how white my K looks! My SO and I literally turned off all of the lights in our apartment and used the flashlight on his phone on the diamond to find the warmth and it was still nearly impossible!

Here are a couple more pics:

@BlondeAries I know it has several years, but your thread is exactly the struggle I’m going with— I have the handmade platinum now— and wondering if I should downgrade to the knife edge platinum— bc I kinda like the straight simple edges/prongs...

The handmade setting’s prongs look like balls and are driving me nuts! Do you happen to have more pics- including side by side pics of both of your settings? Thanks in advance!
