Any of you ever break your ankle?

It's kind of a long story but two days before thanksgiving I hit my foot on a metal desk.

There is raised spot that might be a piece of bone.

I went to the doctor who sent me to get x rayed.

Monday I get the results.

In the mean time he gave me pain medication but not enough to last until Monday.

So right now I'm in a lot of pain and I'm worried that this might really be a piece of bone the tendon running down the back of my leg pulled off (although it could be a concussion, I guess).

Whatever it is, the size hasn't changed, and the level of pain hasn't changed.

This is the kind of thing that worst case scenario considering the size of the piece of bone (if that's what it is) I read they don't do surgery on. I guess they just leave you with a piece of bone floating around. I can't tell you how exciting I am about that! I've never broken any bones in my life. :blackeye:

When I broke my foot, I had frequent shooting pains all the way up to my hip even when the foot was resting, and was unable to move it or wiggle my toes on my own. Is that how it has felt for you?

You could have easily torn something and are feeling an inflamed lump at the site, but unless you are having symptoms like I mentioned, there is a good chance it's not broken. Crossing fingers for you for good news!

I don't know much about broken bones, but just wanted to say I'm sorry you're in so much pain, Imdanny. Ouch. :(( I hope Monday brings good news on your xrays. Please take care.

Thank you, no, shooting pain (some) in my foot, none up my leg.

How did your foot end up? Do you feel any pain now?

Ouch, sounds like a lot pain to me. I broke a toe a few weeks ago and still not healed. Nothing compared to what you are going through though. This may be a stupid question, but are you able to get around? I was told to stay off my foot, but good grief with Thanksgiving and Christmas - no way! Can you keep your foot elevated? Taking any anti-inflammatory meds like Advil?
Hope you feel better real soon.

Oh no! That really sucks. DH had a severe sprain a few weeks before our wedding. Lots of ice, pressure wrap, and elevation.

It is very difficult to chip a bone that way, if it makes you feel any better. Chances are it's swollen tendon. I hope you get better soon, or at least the pain subsides! Sorry you got hurt, and you'll have to come up with a much better story.

It's fine! ::) I did have to give up the possibility of a career in dance, just because they weren't sure if it would take the stresses, but for everyday living I have no issues whatsoever, not even being in heels all day. My feet hurt of course, but not due to the old break! ;))

when i broke my ankle there was no doubt--i could not, and would not, put it down on the ground. i don't think you would be walking around on it, unless it's just a hairline fracture.

Thanks!

I'm sorry you broke a toe. That doesn't sound like any fun at all!

It's wrapped up, no crutches.

Yes, I'm keeping it elevated and and taking anti-inflammatory medication.

I'm just kind of wobbling around when I need to. It's sad.

I'm sorry to hear that. Thanks for the advice!

I hope I don't come up with a better story. :?

I'll find out Monday.

I'm glad to hear it! I know people with broken bones with and without plates and screw who experience pain so I'm glad you don't!

I hope it's no fracture at all to be honest because I've made it this far without ever breaking anything. My mother said they might not take x rays but after looking at it the doctor wanted to. I'll find out Monday.

BTW, I'll post on Monday after I find out and I'll be happy to be wrong if I am. :errrr: :saint:

I recently ended up in the emergency room with tendonitis on the top of my foot and I tell you what that was some of the worse pain I have ever experienced, I had a small lump and then my entire foot swelled up, it hurt so bad to put any weight on it :errrr: I had to elevate my foot, they gave me pain pills and crutches. I have never broke anything so I am unsure how bad the pain it....but hopefully everything turns out to be ok.

Thanks! I could have gone to the emergency room since it was late at night but I called my mother and then decided to sleep on it. The next morning it wasn't any better (it's still the same actually) and so I went to my doctor that day who then referred me to the radiology department at the hospital. I was thinking seriously about going to the emergency room but she talked me out of it. I'm going to be on the phone the first thing Monday morning asking for a refill of the pain medication, though. The pain has been exactly the same this whole time.

I broke a toe and there was nothing that could be done for me. If you are in a lot of pain, you could consider going to your local emergency room and get the results of an xray then and there. Then they could treat you. I'm not sure that waiting is the best course of action, but only you know how bad it feels. I hope it isn't broken. Please keep us informed.

I've broken my left ankle three times (car accident/field hockey/kickboxing) and every time I could not put *any* weight on it whatsoever. It was swollen and horrible. I knew it was broken immediately. Twice I heard the crack.
It's fine now, but I credit that to the fact that I'm married to a muscle specialist. I used to call it my wooden foot, but then my husband started treating me and I've had ROM, strength, and no pain ever since.

I really hope it's not a break, and whatever it is--I hope you heal quickly and painlessly! I'm sorry to hear you're in pain, Danny.

Thanks. I might have gone to the emergency room if i knew it was going to take so long for the hospital to give the results to the doctor (they say they were backed up for Thanksgiving). In in case, I live in a very rural area. The same hospital that did the x rays is the same hospital where I'd have to go to the emergency room. At this point, my insurance company would be royally pissed off, the hospital probably wouldn't be too happy, I don't want to have the foot subjected to being xrayed twice, and I only have to make through tomorrow (I don't expect it to be any more fun than today). But I will get this settled on Monday and report back. Thanks again.

Thanks. That really sounds like it ws painful and I'm glad your husband is helping you. Hearing it crack (twice) must have been awful. Hugs.

I'm so sorry to hear about your misfortune, Danny! From what everybody here has said, it sounds like you may get away without a break. Which doesn't make it hurt any less! Hugs for you & please post the results today. Take it easy in the meantime as much as you can!

For your sake, I really hope it's not broken. Six days is a long time to wait for someone to read your x-rays. I hope you get the treatment you need first thing tomorrow morning.

I fractured my ankle when I fell down the stairs carrying my (then) 7 month old daughter. I got the tip of my shoe caught in the hem of my jeans and fell down half a flight of stairs. My instinct was to protect my daughter, so I didn't put my hands out to break my fall and I fractured my left ankle and ruptured the bursa in my right knee. I was unable to walk for 2 weeks and then on crutches for a while after that. Not much fun. It's been 4 years since then and my ankle tends to be a bit weak sometimes. However, I took my 6 year old roller skating yesterday, so it's not nearly bad enough to keep me from doing most things!

I hope that you get the best news possible on Monday and that you make it through the rest of the day. Constant pain is NOT fun. Feel better Danny.

I once thought I had broken my ankle - instead I tore a tendon. That takes a lot longer to heal than a broken bone.... (it was years before I could manage to swim with swim fins and flap my foot like I should).

this past june i broke my left ankle for the third time. pray that you have a broken bone rather than a tendon problem. broken bones heal faster and better than tendon issues. however, a bump is better than a tear when it comes to tendons/muscles. stay off it. keep it elevated. you could also do some soaks with epsom salts.

i'm thinking if it was a break the x-ray technician would have noticed it and called the dr. in all three of my instances the x-ray results were immediately available.

MoZo

ps hope you have a speedy recovery!

Thank you for the hugs, Danny, but I came into this thread to send YOU good wishes. My breaks are long, distant memories that barely register anymore. You are the one who is in pain now. BIG HUGS to you, I hope the diagnosis is easily treatable, and your recovery is swift!

Now, stay off that ankle!

Honestly, you'll be luckier if you broke it, than tendon damage. I hope for your sake it's a break, because tendons and ligaments can just take forever to heal. I'm the QUEEN of this so trust me. So stay OFF that thing!!

Here's hoping whatever it is that you get some relief and healing!!

Hope its nothing major and the pain subsides soon!
