Hi everyone

I have just bought a lovely earrings for my wife from Blue Nile UK These ones Blue Nile for (£1180 = $2240)

I am still within my 30 days return period, when I saw these
Alternative 1

Alternative 2

Alternative 3

As a very diamond novice, you can imagine my disappointment when I found these selling for much below the price I paid when they are listed with the same secifications. Did I make a costly mistake? I can still return the BlueNile diamond for a refund and buy any of these?

Please let me know what would you do?

Thanks

Hi,

I am no expert!

As those ebay diamonds have no certificates, there is no way to tell the colour and clarity of those diamonds. It could be way off from those stated in the auctions. In the close up photos, the diamonds look heavily included/cloudy IMO.

On the other hand, the blue nile diamonds are certified by GIA. I would keep them.

Hello :)

I voted to keep the BN diamonds you bought.

You have paid for a pair of GIA certificated Ideal-cut diamonds, which IMHO are wayyy better than the other stones listed (not least of which because they are GIA certed).

The second pair of earrings you bought don''t look well cut in the close-up pics of the studs in the box, and I would not buy them.

The Knuckerbling stones look pretty, but are in 18kt gold, whereas the other are in platinum. There''s barely any difference in price, and these stones don''t seem to be GIA certed, which makes me still prefer the BN stones.

Again, with the Rose Diamond studs, the stones aren''t certed and no reference is made to the quality of the cut.

I''d keep the BN ones - they are fabulously well cut stones, and that''s what makes the difference in terms of the beauty of the diamonds (not to mention the fact they have a GIA cert).

Your wife is very lucky to have such a great husband buying her lovely gifts like these!! :)

Absolutely keep the BN diamonds!!! These are well cut, reliably graded and will blow the others out of the water! Besides the cut quality of the Ebay diamonds - which is anyone''s guess - they may not be eyeclean. Also from what I understand, those other diamonds don''t have a grading report. I would definitely say to keep what you have, they are superbly cut and well matched and I don''t think you could do better! It is so easy to second guess yourself ( I do it all the time with big purchases) but you have already got it right first time - honestly!

Hi there,

these diamonds were cut in India (90%+ of all diamonds are) and are certified by the Diamond Institute of India (DII)

Hi everyone

First, thank you for all the replies. I value your opinions.

Above, is an answer I received from Alternative 2 (Aksessorize) about which body issued the certificates for these diamonds

Anyone knows about DII?

Never heard of that lab before.

Another ditto...stay away from ebay!

I would keep the blue nile ones.

1) they are backed by a company
2) you have the option to return
3) you know exactly what you are getting

I would just be worried/nervous about buying something that expensive with so many variables off of e-bay.

Thanks every one for your input. I decided to keep the BN earrings. It is not everyday I buy diamond for my lovely wife, so I must make sure it is of the right quality.

Thanks again for putting my mind at rest.

Has anyone ever of IGGL . Sellers ssid diamond is cert by IGGL

Hi,

The diamonds at BN are far superior stones than the ones on eBay, My only comment on the BN pair is that they are not
matching colours. But far superior diamonds. try and find a pair of matching diamonds the same colour and clarity. If you go slightly
lighter you don’t loose much on the spread.

Like this.

Diamond Grading Report GIA 16652516 GIA

Good luck, you might find some diamonds of lower colour and clarity that are closer to your preferred size for your budget.

if you buy SI2 you can have the seller check to see if the stones are eye clean also before buying.

Kind Regards

Paul

Will the colour difference be noticible in earrings?

It doesn''t matter that the BlueNile earrings are not "matching colors." There will be a face between them, and even if there wouldn''t be, anyone looking at them is not going to be able to tell the difference.

So stick with the ones you bought-I bet they''re beautiful!

It’s correct that the majority of diamonds are cut in India, including the majority of those presented with GIA & AGS paperwork. Any serious diamond company there has the wherewithal to get an exam by either company and they are most definitely aware that US customers and increasingly customers elsewhere prefer it. Since GIA paperwork demonstrably increases the salability of a stone and it’s easy to get, this begs the question, why did they choose the lab they did?

There are a couple of innocuous reasons but by far the biggest and most common is that they wanted grading results that would look better than they expected to get if they sent it to GIA. Maybe it’s a grade or two on clarity or color (or both). Maybe they wanted to avoid the cut grade entirely or to have the cut graded using a different scale that produced better sounding results for that particular stone. If you are planning on relying on this grading to make a sight unseen decision, this can be disastrous. The clarity you seem to be looking at is quoted as SI2 and your colors range from G-J, right above a critical junction for price. What if that means K/I2? You are relying on the lab to tell you the difference and you’ve never even heard of the lab. This is an enormous leap of faith. Since 100% of your basis for believing the lab is the endorsement of the dealer, then 100% of your basis in believing the grading is the word of the dealer. It''s a pretty big deal. Do they deserve it? I don’t know, investigate the dealer with this in mind. As with the lab, if you can’t find sufficient evidence to indicate that their opinions have merit, the default answer is no, and if you don''t trust the grading then you shouldn''t do the deal.

Keep the Blue Nile. You know exactly what you are getting.

You made the right decision by keeping the BN pair.

Another vote for the bluenile ones!

Stay with the BN earrings!

Hi just read the "ebay nightmare" story from 2004.

Search for it and you''ll never look at ebay again, perhaps.

BTW, what ever happened to that ring? The thread sorta peters out..........Anyone?
