The shipping box, the jewelry box, the ring reek of mold. I soaked it in jewelry cleaning solution, wash it with soap several times and it still reeks, but I have a bloodhound nose. It's platinum. What else can I try? I'll try better pictures tomorrow in natural light.

I have no idea, but that seems very strange after all of the cleaning you've done.

Oh, so pretty! Ammonia? Is that safe for rubies? Maybe not if it's oiled...

I think I'm not getting all the fungus out from the crevices. Would it be safe to soak with baking soda?

How strange. Windex, which contains ammonia, should be safe with a corundum, diamond, and platinum piece. It was recommended to me by Lang Antiques, years ago, to clean my (sapphire, diamond, platinum) jewelry with...If I want a piece extra clean, I put a few squirts of Windex and some dish soap into hot water, stir, and soak my jewelry in there 15-30 minutes, rinsing and brushing it off afterward. Might save you a trip to a jeweler for a cleaning. :))

I sometimes make my own cleaning solution, with 1 tbs of borax 1 cup boiling water and I dissolve the borax and let cool down until it comes to warm temp, along with some dish washing detergent. I let that soak for a few mins scrub with a soft toothbrush and that usually gets rid of any smells and gunk for me.

Baking soda helped a ton and I'll try borax next. Thank you for the tips :)
Here it is in different lights

the poor stinky thing must feel so much better after that bath
it is soooooo pretty, im sure lots of time in the fresh air out in the open will help too, even if its just watching tv at night
it will be a mind clean thing now when you get tempted to sniff it

seller at simply sapphires sent me what I thought it was a pen but has a little laser too, and look at the glow.

You can inscribe it! :cool2:

I was going to say ultrasonic cleaner to dislodge crud from any crevices -- but it sounds like that's fixed! Pretty ring!

I’d second @LilAlex - get that ring to an ultrasonic cleaner! Baking soda is good at neutralizing odors, but if the gunk that whatever caused the odors was growing on is still hidden in the setting, the odors could reappear. Plus, I’m a big proponent of taking new old jewelry acquisitions in to a jeweler get prongs etc. checked.
