And today is officially my first day of summer vacation.

I was practicing on my roller skates and wiped out--fell on my tailbone and right arm.
Anyone ever done this? How long were you in your cast? I went to emerg. rm today but won''t see orth. dr. until Monday.
Any tips for fast healing?

Did I mention that I broke my rt. wrist roller skating when I was in second grade?

Typing with one hand takes a long time!

OH NO!
Sad to hear that Haven..you just started again on the roller skates!

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Aw, and I remember just reading about you and getting back on the roller skates! So sorry Haven! Yeah I can imagine typing with one hand takes FOREVER!

No tips here for fast healing though.

I sorry.

Haven,
That stinks, so sorry. Will you need surgery?? My Mom broke her elbow in late April. I broke mine when I was 12, was in a cast for about 6 weeks. HUGS!!!!

Oh no, I am sorry.

You poor sweetie; hope it heals soon.

Ouch!

Sending healing prayers and dust!

Thanks for your support, everyone. The pain is horrible, but I''m scared to take the vicodin they prescribed because I don''t even take Advil or anything so I don''t know how I''ll react.

Beau--LOVE your new av picture!
Kaleigh--I hope I won''t need surgery, but we''ll see what the orth. dr. says Monday. The emerg. dr. didn''t tell me much other than "You have a fractured elbow, see?"

Thanks again everyone! Hubby is going to take me to the movies to help me take my mind off the fact that I won''t be able to do much for the next six weeks--summer is my favorite time to try out new sports, hence this skating injury!

Oh dear!

So sorry to hear that you''re injured!!! I hope you get back on your wheels soon!

PS- take the vicodin! It''ll help... ask Dr House!

ouch!
prayers outgoing

Hoping you have it in a sling till Monday?? Or at least it''s in a good splint?? I hope you have a great orthopedist. I have never taken Vicodin, so can''t help much there.. When I broke mine I was given codeine (SP?) Turned out it gave me a killer migraine and the pain of that was worse than my elbow... Have never taken it since.

Here''s hoping you can hang in there till Monday.. Sending lots of prayers your way...

Ouch!

Typical castings (hard casts) last anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks in a best case senario. I would just follow doctors orders to a "T" for a speedy and full recovery.

OUCH! I have no advice, but I''m so sorry you got hurt!!

Oh, Haven, I hope it heals soon! I was just reading about your skates the other day!
I''m not sure how long it takes an elbow to heal, but from what I''ve seen, I know some people may start in a sling or a splint and then have to have surgery eventually. That would obviously have a longer healing time, so lots of dust that you don''t need the surgery!

Oh No! Sorry to hear about your elbow. (((I hope you heal fast)))

I''ve recently decided to go back to roller skating as well (grown adult woman here), I''ve missed it so much. Can not tell you how excited I was when I got my new skates a few weeks ago!

I feel for you - I fractured my elbow (the radial head) and wrist a few years ago in a fall down the garage steps. The orthopedic dr put a removable cast on it, and then prescribed physical therapy to begin one week after I broke it. The cast went covered from the middle of my hand to half-way to my shoulder on my upper arm. I wore the cast at all times except while showering and when I went to PT. The therapist would remove the cast and then work on stretching and massaging my arm. After about 6 weeks, I went from the cast to a brace and ended up having to wear it for a while. I remember it hurting like crazy, and I didn't hesitate to take my pain medicine!

I hope all goes well with your orthopedic appointment. Having an arm in a cast is tough.

What part of your elbow is fractured and how badly? (radius.....ulna......olecranon....)?

Oh Haven! I''m so sorry to hear that! I hear the words ''broken elbow'' and get chills up my spine. I broke both of mine at the same time many, many years ago (gymnastics). It''s been so long I really have no advice because I''m sure they do things so differently now. I would imagine they would immobilize it for a while and then you''ll have to go through a period of physical therapy. I sure hope you don''t have to have surgery!

If it were me, I would heed the advice of others and…. take the vicodin!!! I swear you’ll feel much better! And no more roller skating, girl!!

Wait... I do have one piece of advice... follow doctors orders and listen to your physical therapists and do what they say. I didn''t because I was a kid and am now left with limited range of motion in one elbow. Not trying to be overly dramatic or anything, but PT can hurt (not always, but can), but it really is the best for quick recovery to do all the ''homework'' they give you (if you need it).

Wishing you a speedy recovery!!!

OUCH!!. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

ouch!! trust me I know how painful that can get!!
get better soon!!!

Omg! Ow!

Haven that REALLY sucks! If they put you in a solid cast it will be at least six weeks...I am so sorry and I hope it heals quickly and easily! And don''t be afraid of your drugs, take them before bed the first time and if you can sleep, then you know they work well. Vicodin is usually pretty good!

So sorry sweetheart, that truly sucks.

Haven! I am so sorry! Take the pain killers!!! I have never had Vicodin, but I have given it to my daughter after a visit to the ER and she was fine taking it. Don''t stay in pain. In fact, try to stay out of pain by not letting it build up. The current theory is that one shouldn''t let it get too bad and then treat it, but keep it under control all the time. Keep us apprised of what the orthopedist says! And good luck!

Haven- That is terrible!! Poor girl. I hope you''re feeling better ASAP.

I''m really sorry to hear that Haven! Especially on your first day of the summer. Sending healing dust!

Awww...so sorry to hear this Haven. I''m guessing the healing time will depend on the severity and location of the break.

In terms of healing up fast, my brother the Nurse Practitioner always suggests extra protein and plenty of fruits and veggies while healing - apparently getting plenty of protein + minerals can actually help speed the bone healing process and make the healed joint stronger than without. So I''d stock up on low-fat dairy and low-fat cheese and tons of fruits and veggies.

Lots of healing vibes headed your way - I really hope it heals up soon so you can enjoy your summer vacay!!

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. I cannot even begin to imagine how much this must hurt. I broke a thumb a few years back and it was super painful, so I can only begin to imagine what your poor elbow feels like. I hope your doctor visit goes well on Monday and you''ve haven''t done too much real damage.

If you decide to take the vicodin, make sure you eat! Do not take it on an empty stomach. Trust me on this, it''s NOT GOOD.

I hope you feel better soon.

Yowch!! Sorry to hear about your fall and injury. An elbow fracture just sounds beyond painful. Take care.

Oh no! So sorry to hear that. That sounds really painful. Sending lots of healing dust your way!
