The ER doctor misdiagnosed my fractured radial head too. He diagnosed my elbow as deeply bruised and my wrist as sprained - and they both were fractured. The hospital called the next day to tell me they had made an error and asked me to come back in so they could cast my arm. Even I could see the fractures on the x-ray. Argh!
The pt starting so soon hurts, but I''m really glad the doctor had me start after only a week. You don''t want your elbow to stiffen up. I hope it heals quickly for you!
Bummer. I remember the doctor saying that when 40-something women fall (which is what I was at the time!) breaking the radial head is rather common. What I found was that I could do most everything except: Tying shoe laces, fastening bra, signing checks. It was winter so I switched to pull on snow boots that I wore everywhere. My car was manual, so I drove DH''s automatic for weeks. I got really good at typing left-handed. I pared down my wallet so I could carry my essentials in my pocket, and skipped the purse for a while. I remember going to a cocktail party and I didn''t want anyone trying to shake my hand. So, I wore the sling and held a small glass of ice water for hours, and it worked perfectly.
The elbow exercises are a pain, but worth it. I can still feel where the break is to this day, but it doesn''t bother me.
