I've seen a zillion headlines with the names Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus, (I had to look up the spelling).
I've never clicked on a story about them so I have no idea if they are professors at MIT, fictitious characters from a video game, whitehouse interns, nobel laureates, singers, actresses, heiresses or just fracking nobodies, like you and I.
I would not recognize them if they entered my home to fix my Internet router.

Am I alone?
Does anyone else here react to stories about them with less than a yawn?

I don't know but I suspect they are just famous for being famous, or personalities manufactured in the boardroom of some high-powered Hollywood agency.
So, do these two women actually have strong talents that I'm missing out on?
I know I can google them up, but I thought I'd sample the PS-meters first.

Re: I don't care about KK or MS? Am I alone?

You are not alone, kenny. I doubt the world of many intellectuals revolves around them. I just happened to hear some interesting tidbits because I attended a Thanksgiving dinner at which several generations were present and we played board games after we ate, which is our custom. One of the games was "Cards Against Humanity". From that I learned a lot about Japanese pornography as well as hearing about the parody of the Kanye West video. It was just a nice, normal, American Thanksgiving!

Karl, I'm so jealous…I wish I didn't know who they were either. I'm looking forward to the day when they aren't in the limelight anymore, but unfortunately there will be others to take their places.

I am aware of who they are, but I have zero interest in them.

(Well, with the exception that I might look at their latest e-rings! )

No interest at all. Not in e-rings, hair color, whatever the latest yawn is.

I don't really know much about them, or care enough to find out. I expect there are plenty things that I'm interested in which would bore them, though. ;))

Do I care about them? No, but only because they represent talent in genres that don't interest me.

Kim Kardashian gets slammed because she, presumably, is only "famous for being famous". The argument goes that she doesn't sing, dance, or act so she should not have celebrity status. But she does have a talent that many people are entertained by: she's a reality show star. I believe the reality shows of today are basically modern day soap-operas. Kim Kardashian is like the Susan Lucci of today. A beautiful, fashionable character, except she plays herself. The media hype leading up to her wedding to the basketball player reminded me of when Luke & Laura of General Hospital got married in the '80s. So, even though I'm not entertained by reality TV drama shows (and particularly not the Kardashian one which I watched once and was amazed at how incredibly boring their day-to-day life appeared) I get that many people are and it makes sense to me that Kim Kardashian is famous.

As for Miley Cyrus - I think she's a very talented singer. Again, it's a genre that doesn't interest me because I don't listen to pop music. But if I did, I would definitely buy some of her music because I think she's got a great voice. As for her recent antics - the woman is a genius! A few months ago no one was talking about her and now everyone is. Forbe's has an article entitled "The Miley Cyrus Conundrum: Condemned If You're "Sexy", Ignored If You're Not". That about sums it up!

Her PR team consists of seasoned pros who know which buttons to push, you mean? :naughty:

I don't care so much about KK - never have. Sure, she's pretty, so I guess maybe that's where some of the public's fascination comes from, but I personally have no interest in her.
As for Miley, I wouldn't exactly call her a "genius" and I find that hilarious. If MC is a genius, then so is the entire cast of Jersey Shore  It's all about the glorification of drunk, horny, young people, which doesn't make them geniuses. They have just been fortunate enough to have a stage, audience, etc. in which to showcase their "performances."
I'm not a fan of the non-stop drug and/or sexual messages that MC parades in front of us, but again, that is often part of the territory for young people. I do however, differentiate MC from KK because I feel that MC actually does have talent (a decent singing voice).

Put the two of them and Jessica Simpson, Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton on a slow boat to China.
I'm sure there's someone I forgot.

You may consider it splitting hairs since you may think that pop stars have no talent, but Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus actually do sing for a living. They have to get up on stages and keep schedules and work with bands and rehearse. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian don't do that. Whether or not you like their music, you cannot say that Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears never made records or sang with bands. It was also pointed out to me (on my famous 2013 Thanksgiving) that both were child Disney stars. They were probably put to work in the film industry, as professional actresses, at early ages.

Kenny, I can't imagine that you might think you are alone in this. Personally, I can't imagine that I could care less.

As for KK, she has never done an interesting thing in her life, and that includes her sex tape. Miley is trying to reinvent herself after Hannah Montana, but her antics merely serve to make her look even more immature.

They are both a big, gigantic "So what?" Yet there are people stupid enough to actually pay them and pay to see them. Odd, isn't it?

I don't care for either of them and I don't think much that they do should be considered "news". It annoys me that they get so much publicity. They are not the only two celebrities that make me feel this way.

kenny...I was tempted to say that you might not recognize who Miley Cyrus was but that you would most certainly recognize, "Wrecking Ball" since it plays constantly on every radio station no matter how many times the channel is turned.... Then I realized that you are not subjected to a teenager (or a newly post-teenager) daily as some of us are and have control of your own radio. It's been decades since I had that situation and, therefore, know far too much about many, many genres of music I hate. (By the way, "Wrecking Ball" is great compared to most rap. Some of the rappers nearly made me stick my head in an oven a few years ago.)

I have no interest in either of them. Unfortunately, news about them is unavoidable, hence I know who they are, even if I do not care about what they do.

These two strike me as the Paris Hilton / Britney Spears / Jessica Simpson equivalents of when I was in university. Not sure who it would've been the equivalents in the 90's or 80s.

New Kids on the Block comes to mind in terms of being super popular in the early '90s with the younger crowd, but I can't think of a single person who got as much attention as KK or MC. There's got to be someone but my mind's drawing a blank...

I can't believe everyone has forgotten about Madonna and all of her antics. Then again, gives me hope that in 20 years no one will remember these two idiots either.

Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the Christina Aquilera/Britney Spears of the 90's.

Everyone else I can think of who was really famous back then was also super talented. KK is talented at having a gigantic derriere and ****, and MC has a famous father and also take off her clothes for a living but is sorely lacking in the backside area. I don't know if she can sing, I haven't listened to pop music recently.
