Does anyone have an I colored Pear? If so, how much more tinted does it appear, compared to an RB?

I am considering one on eBay. It''s being sold thru a reputable jeweler locally, but I wont have time to visit until mid-next week to see it in person. It has a GIA report and I have seen pictures, but I cannot tell how tinted it would be. It''s 1.75ct and it''ll be set in a pendant, so i don''t mind the color as much.

If anyone can comment it''d be great. Thanks!

It is likely that you will detect slightly more tint or color closer to the pointed end that toward the rounded end. Pears tend to magnify the color of the stone in the zone between their bow tie and the point. This happens in marquise shapes, too except there are two points and two zones of intensification of color.

Will it appear less tinted if the bowtie is not as obvious?

The bowtie is nothing much to do with color appearance. A bow tie is a less brilliant zone due to the overall shape and proportions.

I was just attempting to decribe WHERE to look to see color intensification.....Not every diamond shows it, but most pear, marquise and ovals do.

Thanks!

this is a GIA graded I, SI1, 1.75ct pear. I can't remember the dimensions, but it's about 10 x 7mm w/ 58% table and 61% depth, It comes with .40ct of baguetts and 2 settings, one in 14kt gold and one in platinum.

It is currently on sale at a jeweler's thru cosignment and I will be taking a look before purchasing it. Would you say it's a good buy at $5000? Or do you think i can negotiate it down a bit more?

I have an I colored pear. 1.12 carats VS2. I think it's beautiful. Indoors it's perfect, outdoors in direct sunlight I can see a faint tint of yellow sometimes at the tip like David said. It doesn't bother me. I have it set in yellow gold. It's a beautifully cut stone and I love it, I got a great price on it too. It's a 1 to 1.49 ratio so it's a little on the fat side and doesn't have a big elongated area anyway. $5000 sounds like a great price if it's as pretty as the numbers indicate and it's eye clean.

The pictures I saw was as big as my 17" moniter, and i didn't see any inclusions. The jeweler said it's eye-clean as well. I love that it is a bit chubby w/ great curves.

Icicles,
It sounds as though you've found an bargain.
Today, I would estimate that if there's a really good looking Pear Shape 1.72 I/SI1 w/ GIA report, coming out of a cutting factory this month, it would have to sell for at least $6500- $9000

Of course, you'll need to look at the stone to judge the bow tie, and general characteristics unless the photos are very detailed.
But if it's a nice looking stone, on consignment, that could explain the low price.

Have you actually seen the GIA report? Not to doubt anyone, but sometimes there's a strange translation that takes place where an appraisal gets called a certificate, and well, you get the idea.

If you like it, and buy it, you'll have gotten a very good deal.

Yeah, he sent me a picture of the GIA report. It's quite a few years old, but i'm sure it's still okay? It was graded in 1996. Should i have him re-submit it?

no, if you are completely sure that the diamond is accompanied by it's GIA report, I would not say that 1996 presents a problem

As far as I color- here's a GIA K color 2.30. If it's a well cut stone, I color will look pretty darn nice.

I think it would look awesome in a pendant. Set it on a dangling bale if possible- so the diamond can swing and shimmer from all directions.

If you would put the GIA report up, we could have a look at all the particulars

I was looking at the picture of the report during a meeting today and accidently deleted it when the boss came around.

The seller's gonna be out of town for the rest of the week so I wont be able to get another attachment until this weekend. I will post the report when I get it.

If I do get it, I will be taking it to my own jeweler to have it appraised. And of course, credit card purchase only for my own protection.

That's a nice looking pear, David. What are the specs on it?

Hey David,

can you post a picture of that K pear next to a K round side by side? I would like to see how much more tinted a pear is compared to an RB.

Sorry, I can't find a photo of a round K color stone.

here's the stats on the pear shape I posted

I got my 2.01ct I/I1 pear from a French Ebay store. The stone's nice, but has eye-visible black inclusions. The shop has it appraised for insurance purposes at $12000. Is that possible?

Hi Lotus,
Appraisals are completely arbitrary- that is to say, the same item could be appraised for $6000, and $12000 and both could be considered reasonable- after all there's a huge difference on price between the highest price seller and the lowest priced seller..
BTW-That does not mean that your insurance company would pay 12k in the event of a loss.

Dear David, thanks.

Does it mean that a 2.01ct I/I1 pear with black spots could cost $6000 at the low end?

Once worn, I have gotten used to the black spots but would wonder from time to time if I haven't made a mistake buying it in the 1st place.

Hi Lotus,
Yes, the price is possible.

Regarding the question: Should I have bought it?
The one aspect of the diamond forums that bothers me is this: If you love your I/I1 pear shape, I don't think other people's opinions should get in the way of that.
Many times, folks make a comment like- "I'd never want an I1" which might influence someone who owns one- but that would be a mistake.
If you love your diamond, it really does not matter what anyone else thinks about it.

David thanks again.

Btw I visited your Ebay store for the 1st time yesterday and you have really gorgeous stuff in there. Wish I've found it earlier, I am especially impressed by the feedback about your service.

Well, it'll have to be for another time, I've quite foolishly wasted my diamond budget for the year already between being cheated by another Ebay vendor and buying the pear that I've mentioned.
