Yes my patience is short but I''ve chickened out. I''ve found a another sapphire and a spinel .. what are your thoughts on these stones?

There''s a few on White''s site that I like but he hasn''t got back to me about pricing .. anyone have any idea?!

Sapphire ..

A bright sparkling Ceylon sapphire with brilliance, radiance, and grace. Electric blue color, like the tail of a peacock this 7.4x5.9mm shines like few others. $409 1.62

Spinel .. don''t know specs yet as it''s not on site yet!

Hrmm..not sure if I like that "embellished" description on the sapph. I prefer non-flouncy with my gems

I like the cut on the spinel better.

But the sapph does have a nice colour. Vendor?

I''ve noticed that too .. I always feel like I''m talking to a car salesman when I read the stone comments. Vendor is Simply Sapphires.

I paid $1150 USD for a 1.4 carat sapphire, eye clean, not an ideal colour, but pretty nonetheless (and I LOVE it!). It''s the eighth stone in the corundum gallery. Hope that helps :)

I gave him a price range and roughly what I was looking for (which was not something unrealistic) and he seemed happy to work with my budget. So I''d suggest going that route. Indicate the size/ colour you''re looking for; or colour/ price range; or size/ price range... whatever pair is most important to you, and see what turns up.

Lol at the car sales thing. Luckily I don''t think its that bad. I just personally prefer only the basics..then if *I* think it looks like a peacock, so be it!

Ditto Lupinbunny - I would suggest getting something custom cut in your desired specs. I think someone suggseted this in another thread, but the Tucson Gem show is coming up, so may be a good oppurtunity to ask a cutter to get exactly what you want.
No need to rush these things. I know what it feels like when you get to PS - so many things to buy, not enough time. But I''ve always been happier with purchases I''ve done my due dilligence on. It seems more special too, when something has been custom cut for you, yanno?

With re to JW - I recently asked a similiar question of one of the mbrs who have bought from him. They replied that on average, his stones were some of the more expensive ones they had bought - but that its worth it. Basically he has great rough and awesome cuts, so they are kinda *prestige* stones imho.

If you''re on a very strict budget, perhaps try one of the other awesome cutters that may be *slightly* cheaper?

Both those stones look rather dark to me - of course, you may be looking for something on the darker side, but I worry about what those two might look like IRL.

The sapphire looks kind of dark but the spinel is worse. The spinel has TONS of extinction and a whole LOT of gray. Yuck!

I believe most of the stones in the gallery on Jeff's sites are past stones that have already sold (someone correct me if I'm wrong). However, I doubt you'll be able to get a stone from him in your price range, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

The first sapphire is nicely cut, and seems nice. I think the spinel is too dark and too grey.

Yes, the gallery stones are all sold unless there is a random returned stone in there or something.

Please help me understand how you see gray in that spinel. All I see is blue. I''m not sure what I''m missing when you ladies talk about gray in spinels.

Just a FYI, Barry's stones look pretty much exactly how they look in the pictures, in real life. And often, even better.

I really don't like Simply Sapphire's photography. Because of that, I will probably never buy anything from them.

ETA: Joy2theworld compare that spinel to this one.

In THIS thread I explained grey modifiers with photos to another poster.

Thank you. That helped a great deal. I guess I like the gray because I absolutely hate that blue color. I like the one that was posted as an option here.
