Just thought that I would share a story with you all... It is really cute!

I started working from home a few weeks ago and was at the front door to speak with an alarm salesperson when something zooms past my head. I start frieking out thinking that it is a crow and that I will have bad luck for 7 years or whatever the superstition calls for. I proceed to search for the "crow" while screaming and almost crying when after 20 minutes I find a little yellow bird sitting on my stairs. TOO CUTE! I was unsure of what to do and as silly as it sounds was still afraid to get close to it. After I calmed down a bit, I realize that it is a canary and it has escaped from someone''s home. Not believing that I would find its owner I proceed to the pet store to buy a cage, toys, food, etc. I put a found ad in Craigslist but no one has responded and I am really attached to her now. I have never wanted a pet, let alone a bird but I must say that I am smitten. She is the cutest thing in the world! It sounds really silly but I feel like she is my daughter! I get up early in the morning to feed her fresh fruits and veggies, change her food and water and play with her. She is pretty skiddish still but I am hoping that she will trust me more as time goes on. I have done a good amount of research on canaries and feel pretty confident that I am doing everything correctly but I would love some advice on how to help her trust me more. Also, I let her out of her cage during the day to roam freely around my office. I open the window for her and she loves to sit on the window sill (sp?). She stays out until the evening except to eat and them I cover her at night. Is this ok for her? It is my understanding that most birds stay in their cages all of the time but I feel bad for her. I have bird-proofed everything and have paper towels EVERYWHERE to protect my things from her you know what. I really want to make sure that she is happy and safe and would love any feedback as to what more I could do and how to make her trust me. Thanks!

I''m afraid I can offer you no advice, but I think it''s wonderful how you''ve taken her in your home and heart. With such love and interest in her wellbeing, it is clear she is a very lucky bird indeed and will likely thrive in your care. What a sweet story!

NO advice.. .but she sounds darling!

I would call a vet and ask for advice though if it were me.

I think having her out of the cage for most of the day is probably better for her. I don''t know much about canaries, but I know with parakeets and cockatiels, you''re supposed to give them plenty of out-of-cage time every day. They just can''t get a lot of exercise and stimulation in a little cage!

What a cute story! Good for you for taking in a bird in need of a home...it sounds like you''re taking very good care of your new friend.

Awww, how cute! I had a pet bird and love her. You need to post pics for us

Aww, what a cute story. I have a cockateil, who loves to be out of her cage. She also loves to sit on my windowsil to hear the birdies chirping outside. I think you are doing a great job. I don''t know anything about Canaries, but your local Petco, or the like can give you more info. Please post some pics for us!!!
