So I sent my emerald ring (attached) to GIA for a report. I had also sent a ruby and other rings. I noticed something was up on the ruby ring. It's a white gold (not rhodium plated) ring with a yellow gold bezel. GIA listed this as as a ruby ring in a "yellow metal band". I sort of dispute that since it's not listed its yellow and white metal band but whatever. Just seemed odd the most prestigious grading institute would list like that but ok.
Today I got a shipping request from the them and fee amount. The fees were exhorbient. I asked what's up. They sent a breakdown. They are charing me 210 for an emerald grading report. I asked why. I looked at the fees online. $85 for an origin report and grading for emeralds. 210 is listed as the emerald and origin fee for emeralds over 4 ct. They are insisting my emerald is 4 ct. I said it's not. The lady on the phone starts talking about item weight...and I said the total item weight doesn't matter b/c it consists of an emerald, multiple diamonds and a band. Then I said "I thought you don't determine ct value for items that are set". They said they don't. I said well it's clearly not 4ct. I told her even the band saiys .41 ct. She said no that is the diamond weight .41 ct listed on the band. I said no the diamonds are .3ct it clearly says on the band.
She said the fee they charge me is based on their estimation of the emeralds size and are determining the emerald is 4ct. If I want it rechecked I have to pay for them to recheck it. I don't want to do that since it's clearly a big discrepancy?
I said Its odd the most prestigious gem institute can't decipher a .41 ct emerald is not a 4 ct emerald. She said it's based on measurements. Measurements are 4.98 x 4.08 x 2.79 mm according to GIA. Gia insists this equates to a 4-6 ct emerald. The emerald is tiny.
How are they messing this up. I told them I'm not paying for a recheck they are wrong. I am attaching the ring in question. What is going on here? Has anyone had this happen. It makes me question the integrity of all of their grading to be honest.
What can I do? I am not paying $210 for an emerald report of an emerald that is .41 ct b/c they claim it's 4 ct. Thats insane.
