I am having a serious problem with GIA re my emerald

So I sent my emerald ring (attached) to GIA for a report. I had also sent a ruby and other rings. I noticed something was up on the ruby ring. It's a white gold (not rhodium plated) ring with a yellow gold bezel. GIA listed this as as a ruby ring in a "yellow metal band". I sort of dispute that since it's not listed its yellow and white metal band but whatever. Just seemed odd the most prestigious grading institute would list like that but ok.

Today I got a shipping request from the them and fee amount. The fees were exhorbient. I asked what's up. They sent a breakdown. They are charing me 210 for an emerald grading report. I asked why. I looked at the fees online. $85 for an origin report and grading for emeralds. 210 is listed as the emerald and origin fee for emeralds over 4 ct. They are insisting my emerald is 4 ct. I said it's not. The lady on the phone starts talking about item weight...and I said the total item weight doesn't matter b/c it consists of an emerald, multiple diamonds and a band. Then I said "I thought you don't determine ct value for items that are set". They said they don't. I said well it's clearly not 4ct. I told her even the band saiys .41 ct. She said no that is the diamond weight .41 ct listed on the band. I said no the diamonds are .3ct it clearly says on the band.

She said the fee they charge me is based on their estimation of the emeralds size and are determining the emerald is 4ct. If I want it rechecked I have to pay for them to recheck it. I don't want to do that since it's clearly a big discrepancy?

I said Its odd the most prestigious gem institute can't decipher a .41 ct emerald is not a 4 ct emerald. She said it's based on measurements. Measurements are 4.98 x 4.08 x 2.79 mm according to GIA. Gia insists this equates to a 4-6 ct emerald. The emerald is tiny.

How are they messing this up. I told them I'm not paying for a recheck they are wrong. I am attaching the ring in question. What is going on here? Has anyone had this happen. It makes me question the integrity of all of their grading to be honest.

What can I do? I am not paying $210 for an emerald report of an emerald that is .41 ct b/c they claim it's 4 ct. Thats insane.

Oh, they also initially tried to tell me that my ruby wing was 5 carats but they’re only charging me $85 for a 5 carat Ruby, which didn’t make sense but the Ruby is .75 carrots it’s nowhere close to five ct like honestly at this point, I’m questioning all of their integrity

They seem to be basing the carat value off the measurements of the stone because my ruby is five point something millimeters and the emerald is four point something millimeters and I pointed out to the lady that the measurements of the stones are in millimeters and she said yes, that’s correct and I said well that doesn’t equate to carat value

I don’t see how GIA can determine the weight of my stone when they clearly say they don’t determine the value because it’s set in a setting and I don’t know how you confuse an emerald that’s under one carat with something that’s 4 carat

Does this look like a 4 carat emerald to anyone else?

Call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor and/or gemologist, not a receptionist. It's possible they got your report mixed-up with another.
They usually take the sender's stated weight for the report, unless it's way off. I've never had an issue with this, but I rarely send them set stones.

Call and insist that it's an error. Also, send an email as backup/support after you call them - and send it to the lead for that lab. You can google who that is.

Pretty ring, btw!

I think we can all agree that the emerald is nowhere near 4ct just judging by the dimensions alone. I agree with everyone else... she's probably a secretary or someone in the front office who is arguing a point she doesn't understand. I have, in the past, asked to speak directly to a gemologist who then called me back. I would not pay that on principle alone or I'd dispute it with my cc if all else fails. Good luck!

The lady yesterday said she was going to contact someone in the lab and prior to calling her. I had sent an email that morning explaining the same thing saying hey you’re wrong it’s .41ct not 4. I usually get responses from them really quickly and I didn’t get a response so that’s why I called in the afternoon and then today I got a response to the email from the same person I talked to, but that was all I got so it’s kind of disappointing because it’s dragging out longer and longer.

It's probably because of Thanksgiving... hang in there. I hope they resolve this quickly for you!

Well, I can always call them and pretend I'm you. I can be rather persuasive. :cool2:

Then again, if it's at Carlsbad, I can pay them a visit!

Wait, what?!
Amazed this transpired.
I just honestly immediately thought, "Are they daft?"
Shockingly, seemingly inept.

Talk to someone real and have a conversation about this. That's nuts.

Just caught up on this thread now. How very bizarre. Wishing it works out quickly for you.

Or, pay and demand a 4 carat emerald when they send it back?

Yeah, I guess I could dispute it stating that I wasn’t sent a 4 carat Emerald back I thought about just asking for something in writing and making them write down that they estimate this emerald to be 4 to 6 carats but I don’t think they’re gonna do it… they’re gonna come back and say they don’t decide carrot weight on set jewelry I’m pretty sure…. But I think if they they’re gonna charge me for an emerald that size they need to put in writing that it’s at least that size with all certainty.
