Humana

The Reps have had 7 years to come up with something to replace Obamacare and still don't have a plan. I don't think it's the Libs who are useless.

Obamacare will die by itself. Neither side have any solutions on health care.

Why wouldn't the Reps just make changes and improvements to Obamacare? If they make changes so it's more affordable, better coverage and everyone has insurance it a win win for everyone. Do they not think EVERYONE would be thrilled with getting a better plan and saving money?

I heard a conversation tonight with two Republicans. One has been laid off from their job and cobra is going to end. This person has nothing but complained about Obama for years and found Obamacare the most affordable option. It was expensive but other plans she researched were more expensive by several hundred dollars per month. I have no idea what plans she researched but she said there were a few. I was actually surprised she even discussed this knowing her feelings about Obama.

Yes, but with Humana leaving in 2018, are there enough companies left to salvage it? And make it affordable without these $5,000 + deductibles?

Yes COBRA is going to be a problem as my husband in quite a bit older than me, so it will run out long before I qualify for Medicare..

Any why is Humana leaving? Because they are afraid that the ACA will be repealed as stated by the GOP. Insurance companies are only looking out for their own bottom line. They don't care about people's health unless forced to by the Government. If the Government do not hold their feet to the fire, they will jump ship ASAP. If you want Humana to continue to cover you, complain to your Representative! Your representative is the one who is intent on repealing ACA with no replacement in sight.

So, let me get this straight, you are insured through your husband, and the only plan his company offers is a high-deductible plan, correct?

I also want to understand the mechanism where the ACA is solely responsible for the plan or plans his company offers, because from where I'm standing, I could see no connection between the ACA being in place, and the types or levels of coverages offered by my company. When I was still working, the insurance plans my company offered did not change appreciably in either coverage or cost after the ACA went into effect. The cost went up some, but not more than it's been going up every year for the last 20+ years.

I'd also like to point out that your repeated complaint about not having coverage for very long after your husband retires, it not exactly a new problem. That has been an issue forever, when there is a significant age gap between spouses. Since you seem OK with going back to a world where you can't get insurance for any price if you don't work for a company who offers it, I don't see the reason for complaint.

My employer also went to only HDHP options as a result of the ACA and the subsequent increased costs of non-HDHP plans. It was the only way they could keep health insurance coverage affordable for everyone. For me, it's not so bad because I only cover myself (DD is on her dad's family plan). But the costs jump considerably for those covering a family, as well as the associated deductibles that must be met before it actually brings any value.

Jenn, I worked for a Fortune 500 company for 30 years. The provided excellent insurance. I remember hearing people complaining about the family plan being much more expensive that many years ago. This isnt anything new. Family plans have always been quite a bit higher vs single employee coverage.

Of course family plans cost more (in premiums), but they (HMOs) used to kick in toward costs immediately vs. waiting until you met a deductible (we just had a small $15/$25 co-pay for each dr visit). Now, you don't really get much benefit until you meet the deductible (lowest my company offers is $5K for family) - I pay the full negotiated price of the dr visit up front until I meet the deductible.

For my friends who had to get coverage on the exchange, it's the same deal - the only way monthly premiums are 'affordable' is with a high deductible health plan, which - barring a major health issue - isn't likely to be met in the course of one year even for some families. Even then, the monthly premium costs for some are as much as their mortgage/rent each month. As a single person, my annual deductible is $2500, and in the four years that I've had this plan, I've only ever met it one year.

I've yet to meet one person who - net - is saving $2500/year comparable to what they had pre-ACA.
