How''s My Deal on Diamond Earrings

I am considering the purchase of a pair of round cut diamond earrings from a local jewler. Am I paying too much or about right?

2.00 tcw
GIA cert on each stone
G color (very pretty white)
SI-1 (I''ve looked under a 10x lupe - hard to see flaws)
Medium to thin (not sure what that means)
"Ideal" proportions - within all the proper % tolerances
No flouresence
Platinum setting

His asking was $13,900 - he came down to $12,000 and we''re trading out another $3,000 in services - bringing the net price down to $9,000 - although I do have to perform the $3,000 in services.

Am I making a reasonable deal?

are the diamonds both full carats or is the weight rounded up?

Is the note of "proper tollerances" yours of the seller''s - not sure what that might mean. Did they explain ?

That was my phrasing...I don''t remember all the percentages or the exact terminology - but I know that the table (is that it?) is supposed to be around 50% and the depth is like 62% or something like that - whatever it was I knew it fit within the range of an "ideal" cut - so I made up the phrase "tolerances."

"Ideal cut" gets a rather harder definition for the premium (table, depth, crown and pavilion angles, polish and symmetry included - and more depending on what standard is used).This is why I asked...

At least, it takes all those numbers to claim a premium on cut. Not that non-ideals would miss a leg or something that is.

1 carat Harts and Arrows rounds appear listed for a tad less than 6k around here. Take off the H&A cherry, and prices go down to $4500 apiece. (loose of course). Admitedly, prices online are less and these quotes do not include the setting... which can definitely add something if intricate.

Anyway, this does not sound too bad to me. At least judging from PS accounts and my experience, prices are never all that great when a trade-in is involved. This once, 12 k appears just fine.

Pricescope may not be the whole WWW, but there are a couple hundred quotes for G/SI caraters from a dozen or so seller that you can browse for price comparison.
