Hello: just wondering if I can bring my mac book screen back to life again.Recently while visiting a friend in Maui my screen was so dirty ( I did not have anything to clean it with) My friend gave my some fleece like material with lenses cleaner ( o boy did I clean it) It basically made a major mess and whatever I do not won''t take it off.Any suggestions? Thanks

I have used those cleaning cloths they sell at office supply stores. If you need to remove something I would take it to your nearest apple store.

Buy IClear screen cleaner and a cleaning cloth (comes in a little kit) at your local Apple store or online. I have it and it works like a charm!

I work at an Apple Store, and we don''t recommend iClean or iClear for glossy screens like the MacBook because it requires wayyyyyyyy too much elbow grease to get the smeary look off. Official store policy is to use a lint-free cloth dampened with just a little water. Hope this helps...

Regardless of whether apple recommends it or not...I have this for my macbook and it works soooooooo well. It DOES take a little while to get the stuff off, but works better for me than just water.

Hey, if it works for you, it works for me. Our Genius Team only has one member with the patience to keep buffing the solution off, and lots of customers have called me to complain about it. It works really well on my matte screen, and I''m glad you got it to work for you!

On glossies I just stick with the water because there''s no residue.

darkeyes, I have a question for you. My return key fell off. How long does it take to fix something like that?

Tacori, it can depend on which type of computer you have. At our store, we keep a keyboard graveyard of sorts that we can steal keys from to use as replacements. That can happen in five minutes or so, if the key is available. If not, they can order a new keyboard for an iBook, PowerBook, or a MacBookPro, or a new topcase/keyboard combo for the MacBook. If they have the part on hand it''ll take thirty minutes or so, or they can order it (a few days) and then you bring in your computer when it''s time to do the repair. Hope that helps...

I have the key. It is hung on loosely. I have an ibook. Is it expensive? I think I still have my extended warranty but am not sure.

Tacori - I had to buy a new keyboard for my iBook and it was about $50 I think. Mine was from a tea splash... when I lost my W and my 2 keys. It took about 10 minutes for the guy to replace it, but about 3 days for the part to come in.

The key should have a little plastic/wire thing underneath, which is what allows it to stay hooked on the keyboard. If that''s broken, they should be able to use one from a used keyboard easily, for free. Like sumbride said, worst case scenario is that you order a new one and wait for it. If you have AppleCare, it should be covered since it''s broken from wear and tear, not damage. You can check to see if AppleCare is valid by going to http://www.apple.com/support/ and typing your computer''s serial number into the box all the way at the bottom of the page on the left side. It''ll tell you if you''re covered or not.

3m sells electronic wipes that are also suitable for laptop monitors. They work pretty well and seem to be gentle.

many thanks to everyone .Will try your ideas..

It still had that wire piece. I entered my serial number and says it is not covered but I did buy the extended warranty. Do I just bring in the box? (I guess I never registered it).

Tacori, bring the box into an Apple Store and explain your situation. If the key is salvageable, there wouldn''t be a charge for fixing it anyway. Seeing a manager will be your first step toward getting the AppleCare applied to your computer after the fact, although you''ll probably need to call 1.800.APL.CARE to talk to customer service about it. They''re the ones who can change your computer''s warranty status.

Scarleta, sorry for the threadjack! Good luck with your MacBook screen. If the water or iClear suggestions don''t work, definitely take it into a store before putting any other chemicals on the screen. The LCD is sensitive, and you probably don''t want to damage it before getting some more official advice.

Thanks darkeyes.

Sorry for the threadjack as well!

No problem, Tacori. I hope it works out with minimal headaches!

no problem with the threadjack I am enjoying all the education.Who know when I may need it.Thanks

I use my Mr. Clean magic eraser mostly. If it''s super greasy, I''ll wipe with windex wipes as well. Works for me but is it bad for my macbook?

Windex can deteriorate your LCD (liquid crystal display) because the cleaner contains ammonia. If you dry out or crack your LCD, that''s pretty much the most expensive repair possible on a MacBook. It would be coming out of your pocket, too, so I don''t recommend it. Stay away from cleaners with ammonia or alcohol. I looked up the Mr. Clean eraser and read some reviews that it can be abrasive to mirrors or glass, so I''d recommend sticking with the soft cloth and water or iKlear method.

I always remove large chuncks with a soft brush then...
small amount of water on cloth and if that dont get it a dab of zest on a damp cloth, lather onto the cloth with your finger first, apply, wait 1 min then wipe.

Use at your own risk but iv done it on dozens of lcd and crt monitors with no bad effects.
