Hi!

I am planning on having a ring made. Double row of 5 stones, round and about 3 carat total.

How picky would you be in the stones when this size? Does ideal cut matter? H and A?

I will most likely go through GOG or some other rec. on this site.

Thanks!

How much would the stones be each? .30? You definetly want well-cut stones regardless of size and in those small stones, the better cut, the bigger and brighter they''ll look!

I have a ring with small diamonds around a sapphire (I don''t know the size, but small... maybe 2pointers?), a diamond fell out and was replaced. I had assumed (and well, yaknow... but this was way pre-PS) that the jeweler would replace it with the same quality. Didn''t happen. It sticks out like a sore thumb!

You should be very picky!

Pay physical cash directly to the owner and you might have some leverage to bargain for a further discount, if you know what I''m getting at

I believe I remember Brian Gavin coming on at some point (maybe that old discussion about over 41 degree angles?) and I am pretty sure at some point he mentioned that in diamonds under 50points there is more leeway. (I think he specifically used 50 points as a ct weight at which he referred to the angles and % as having a more significant impact) I may be wrong about it. I will try to look it up but if I don''t find it maybe some body can verify or refute my recollection?

Obviously the cut will be important, but I think it also makes sense that there would be less relevance the smaller you go. 30 points is still noteworthy, but I suspect you will have a little more room to accomplish the same ends as with a larger diamond.

I have a 5 stone 1ctw ring and I got special cuts (like ideals but the store''s branded brand *ducks flying objects*). So each stone is .20cts and there is a huge difference between crappy .20s and excellent .20s. I''ve seen it with my own eyes. My 5 stone always gets a ton of compliments because it''s so well cut, white and clean. I''ve got a friend who has very mediocre .20s, same style/ct size, different store. Her ring pales by comparison. It''s stones are lifeless and dull.

I was wrong about Brian Gavin saying that (I just reread his posts in that thread)

and I second surfgirl, it is def large enough, like she said, for there to be a big difference in a crappy cut and an ideal. I don't know if there is any little extra leeway or not--I hope someone can tell us for sure--but why take it even if there is? make sure those little fellas are as good as you can get em where your getting them:)

near h&a or better with good angles, I-SI grade is what I would look into with 30 pointers.
Finding 10 matching stones will be fun for the vendor.
GOG may be able to get them from the vendor they are working with on the new earring project.
That said a double row of 30 pointers is going to be a very wide ring.

actually you are right that he has said that there is some leeway in the angle combos.
Under .50 he will allow some steeper combos he wont allow in the larger ACA's.

My opinion:
With the smaller stones under .50 a case can be made for a slightly higher crown than in larger sizes.
Wifey2b's GOG classic is 40.8/34.5 42 pointer and is the most awesome diamond I have ever seen in that size range where in larger stones I have a personal preference for 41/34 range stones.
Iv seen a 41/35 48 pointer that I liked a lot also.
That combo can rock in larger sizes but id rather have other combos.
