I have an engagment ring from 1925 with an old european cut diamond. It''''s in very good shape and is platinum so It should be pretty strong, but this is the 2nd time in about 2.5 years that it has been a teeny tiny bit loose. The first time the place I bought it from tightened it for free and I''''m going to ask them again. But I''''m curious should this be happening so often?

It''''s a good thing I check it on a regular basis.

MIne has come loose once, also platinum....got a link to the pic of this piece?

sigh...I''ve had my ring for about 6 months, and I noticed the other day that the center diamond is loose. I hope its not going to be something that happens often

My ring was first loose right after I got it resized from a 7 to a 3 3/4, and then it was loose again just three weeks ago... but that was about a year after I got it resized, and I am pretty sure that I knocked it on something. My prongs are platinum, also and I get my ring checked every two or three months because it is high set.

My sidestones are in three prongs and twice in the first 7 months i had the ring a sidestone got loose (not sure if it was the same one or different becuase i didn''t pay attention to which way I had the ring on). The second time I was a little "firm" with the jeweler about the fact that it should not be happening so often.. So they promised to fix it for good.. its been a year a half almost since the second time and no problems.

Mine came loose after only a few months, and actually FELL OUT while I was at a busy restaurant in South Beach on vacation with some friends! Luckily I looked down in time to see it sitting SIDEWAYS...had I tipped my hand it would have fallen out.

We had the prongs shortened (they were too high) and the stone reset and then it came loose again. Went back, he tightened it up and it''s been ok ever since.

My e-ring stone came loose after I dropped it in the sink!

Those things should come with tiny parachutes or something. Since I got it fixed, though, I have had no problems despite dropping it a few more times...once on tile floor, once in the shower & etc. I hate it when that happens -- you can see it falling in slow motion and all you can hope is that it doesn''t chip the stone!

Make sure to tighten your prongs every 6 months or so... and if it starts catching lint or snagging things, get it checked out before it gets looser.

My princess stone was loose a few times over the 4 years I''ve had it. I take my rings in to be tightened and polished every 3 months.

What setting is it innerkitten, prongs? How many and is it an original 1925? May be it time to replace the head as any metal has limited number of bends back and force then it breaks, even Platinum which is very plasic. It's called "metal fatigue".

I will move this to Rocky Talky if you don't mind.

In 8 years, my stone has never come loose nor fallen out. I have only had the prongs checked once in eight years and they were fine (last month). Now that I have written this, my stone will fall out tomorrow. ;) *crosses self, knocks on head, throws salt over shoulder, and kicks black cat out of house*

You have asked a good question.
Most people assume that when they buy a piece of jewelry they can wear it for a lifetime. Where this may be true especially if it is platinum it does not mean that you do not need to treat jewelry with care. Remember that most jewelry is made of rather thin wire of a soft precious metal. Things get bent, dented and scratched.
For this reason it is important to take your jewelry to a trusted jeweler once or twice a year. Have a professional clean it and look it over to make sure all the settings are tight. Have them make sure there is still plenty of metal over the gemstones. This is also a good time to have the jeweler give it a light polish to bring back the original luster of the setting. Jewelry needs to be paid attention to, for many people it is one of the largest purchases they will make in their life. Do not ignore it.
Some jewelers will not charge you for this work. They are going on the assumption that you will return as a happy customer in the future. Others operate on the pay as you go philosophy.

i have to get my stone''s prongs tightened about once a year. i don''t know why...but i''m interested to see now that i have a new head on my ring if maybe that won''t be the case...i wonder if it was because my old head had more than one stone in it.
