Hi,

Well this is my first post on Pricescope. So far the site has really been helpful in searching for a e-ring for my girlfriend.

I''m currently looking for the rock, but the band is what i''m wondering about right now. She likes things nice and simple, just one stone, mounted with a plain band and prongs so that the stone is what gets all the attention.

She likes white gold, but has small fingers (size 4 ring finger) and would like a band as small as possible. I''ve seen 2mm bands, and I think they''re too thick...how small can you get them (1mm?)? Is there any danger in getting too thin where you could loose the diamond? Someone suggested that I should consider platinum over white gold because it''s stronger, especially since i''m trying to get a very narrow band.

Advice very much appreciated

1.5 to 2 mm is probably on the lower end of what is structurally safe. My jeweler recently advised me to go no lower than 2 mm for 3 sided pave bands, or perhaps as far down as 1.5 mm for single side pave. I haven't seen bands much narrower than this. I recall that some PSers with narrow bands have deeper bands to compensate as well.

I believe there was a thread on this recently. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I prefer platinum because I had to replate my white gold every month tokeep it white. In the long run, at 30 bucks a ring every month, platinum was the obvious choice.

Further, you should consider a tiffany style setting, its about 2-3 millimeters onthe finger wide, but comes up in kind of a knife-edge which makes it look REALLY thin, and makes the stone POP. It''s simple and in platinum wouldn''t be super expensive. Just think ahead to the wedding band because some settings bulge out and make it hard to wear a normal band without a gap.

Here's a pic of my 6 prong tiffany setting with a plain band in platinum, it is a size 4.
