How many crowns do you have in your mouth?

13 now that I had an extraction of a tooth that also had one.

Do the crowns holding my bridge in place count?

For this poll, one bridge counts as 3 crowns, one for the missing tooth and two for the adjacent anchor teeth.
If TWO teeth were missing the bridge would count as 4 crowns, if they even do that.

My poll, my rules.

Well sh!t. 15 then.

Just 1.

I have 11 crowns and am in my 50s.

I didn't start brushing and flossing till I was 19.
By then I already had one crown and lots of fillings.

My gums are a-okay though since I floss daily.
Gum disease, which the majority of American have, is the main cause of tooth loss, not tooth decay.
The gums, and bone, just let go of their hold on the teeth.

My dentist has assured me if I keep taking care of my gums I'll take all my teeth to the grave.

Zero. How do they put them in? Does it hurt?

Um, it's kind of gross, but I have 2 crowns and my mom is a dental assistant, so I will do my best to explain.

To do a crown, the dentist will shave down your tooth to a small enough size so that a tooth-shaped/colored metal/porcelain 'crown' can be anchored onto the remaining tooth/root. In my case, I had two peg laterals (laterals are the smaller teeth on the top next to your two front teeth), meaning they were smaller than they should be, so they didn't have to take much off of my real teeth in order to fit the crown into place. Edited to add: I just had novocaine during the procedure, and didn't have to have temporary crowns, which I hear can be quite bothersome. Not really 'painful,' per se, but not exactly a dance party, either.

This article explains other situations where you might get a crown: http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/dental-crowns A dental implant can also have a crown put on it, which is what you can do if you lose a tooth but have healthy enough bone remaining.

A crown is NOT to be confused with a veneer, which is just a tooth shaped 'front' cemented on top of the fronts of your teeth without altering your own tooth shape.

None. I actually had to google what a crown was :errrr: .

This thread reminded me that I seriously need to go to the dentist. I haven't been for a normal check up in 4 years  to my defense I had a bad surgery that has left me a bit skittish. Usch I feel so stupid, what if I have a cavity?

Is it normal to have crowns? Why do you have them?

Do you mean that you did not brush your teeth as a child? But if you had been to the dentist how is that possible?

I should not have googled gum disease (although it did give me a kick in the butt to actually get to booking an appointment). I have a ton of plaque supposedly due to my saliva's chemical composition so I really should have that taken care of every year. Now I am completly freaked out about maybe having gum disease. Off to google how you can check for gingivitis.

I was born missing an adult molar, so once they pulled my baby molar out in bootcamp (I was 19) nothing was there to keep my other teeth from migrating. So they ground down the two adjacent molars and placed the bridge in there. I had a maryland style bridge for a few years. Until it constantly kept popping off. Count yourself lucky if you've never been chewing a chunk of bread to have practically three of your teeth end up being chewed instead. Just recalling the absolute surreal feeling and texture of biting down on it makes me nauseous.

I was also born missing my lower set of wisdom teeth and my top wisdom have come in no problems. However, I'm going to have them pulled because they just keep erupting (nothing is below them so they don't know when to stop). That means the very sensitive root is exposed. Not fun :nono:

Zero crowns and only one teeny tiny filling and I'm 52.

that sounds like a good rule. Just because I heard how bridges work and oh boy, it sounds like the same amount of work as 3 crowns.

1 crown due to absorption. No cavities.

Not even a filling

I do have crooked teeth though I'd like them sorted out.

I'm with Porridge...no crowns, no fillings...age...40 and going down...I'll be 39 this year, lol!

Same here. No crowns, no fillings! And a million dollar smile thanks to those braces I had in high school!

I occasionally brushed improperly but never heard of dental floss or learned how to brush properly till I was in the Navy.

No crowns, no fillings! I have always loved to floss my teeth, even as a little kid. One Christmas, I got a package of dental floss in assorted flavors, and I was over the moon! I grew up going to the dentist regularly every six months, and it's a habit I've maintained as an adult. I actually look forward to it.

Thanks rubybeth!

I went to the dentist last week and had a clean too. Got told off for not flossing

I have 3 fillings but otherwise teeth are in great shape thank god. Crowns don't sound like fun. I'm taking up flossing!

No crowns, no fillings.

I have four porcelain veneers on my four front teeth because I'm extremely vain about my teeth and mouth. They were worth every penny IMO.

I had a problem with over-brushing and over-flossing as a child and young adult. Being pregnant has totally changed my love of oral hygiene. I can't wait to be able to brush my teeth without gagging again.

Do I have? 0. Should I have? 1.

When I was 7 or 8, I broke off most of my front tooth. It was a brand new adult tooth too, what a mess! It was remade with composite filling material. Fast forward to 11 or 12, and I needed to have a root canal. Just a few years ago, I found out I should have had a crown placed on that one. I never have, and the composite material had darkened over time (it had been there ~20 years). Just a couple months ago, I asked for my options of getting that fixed, and they said crown or "resurfacing" the current material. I opted for the new surface material, and it looks SO much better!

Just got my fourth one two weeks ago and I've only got 24 teeth. FYI...don't let your kids crunch on ice all the time. I went through phases where I couldn't get enough. Turns out it's a sign of anemia.
My dentist has this machine that cranks out porcelain crowns in 15 minutes. I was in the chair for a little less than 2 hours. It's not cheap, but it sure beats having a temp. for two weeks and they fit like a glove.

I can blame grinding on most of mine if not all. Wee!

General PSA for anyone: don't brush too hard! My sister is a fanatic about keeping what I call her 'News Anchor Smile' in tip-top shape, but because she brushed too hard, she now has receeding gumlines. Gumlines never go back to normal after they have receeded, so brush gently, carefully, and just brush longer if you don't feel like your teeth are clean, don't brush harder!

I have 2 and I just found out yesterday that one has an infection under it and I will probably have to have it taken off/healed/
and have a new one put back on. Just thinking about it gives me a headache! Why couldnt I just have had a small cavity or something
minor??? BUT NOOOooooo :knockout:

Zero but I have two fillings..one of which has fallen apart and I refuse to get fixed because I'm afraid of the dentist. Actually, I had a nightmare about it yesterday. :errrr:

Zero. But my dentist wants me to get one on a tooth where I have a very large filling because he thinks that it could crack. Its been there forever and I'm not worried about it so my vote is to leave it alone.

OoohhhH!!! I get nightmares all the time about teeth-related stuff! From the time I was little and broke my tooth. Sometimes, they all fall out, others they decay and rot away. Sometimes they're in color, others black and white, but my mouth is always sore after I wake from one. I think I clench my teeth in my sleep when I'm really stressed, which beings on the dreams. I have two really memorable ones too, that I can look back and giggle a bit about now, about the sheer absurdity of it.

Remember Ren and Stimpy? This dream was totally animated, in the same style. My teeth got all loose, and I tried to push them back in. It worked for a second, but then get even worse. They all fell out, and then all that was left were little red threads of wiggling nerves coming out of the exaggerated holes in my mouth.

The other one... You know the gum that comes in blister packs, that has a bit of a sugary coating on the outside that flakes off as you chew? Well, layer upon layer of all of my teeth flaked off. I couldn't get the flakes and dust out of my mouth, no matter how much I rinsed and spit. I woke up with my whole pillow wet, still groggily trying to spit stuff out.
