I was reading an interview with a large handbag manufacturer who said that last year the average number of handbags a woman bought was 4-5 per year. This made me feel funny as I barely buy one per year. So my question is, how many bags do you think you buy per year? And do you think you''ll buy fewer of them in this new economy?

I am trying to find out if I am the only one who buys so few.

I only buy one a year too. Handbags aren't "my thing." All that I care is that it's well crafted, leather, and a reasonable price. I tend to spend more on other fashion items such as designer jeans.

ETA - the economy won't impact my shopping choices, however, my desire to have a nice savings account will. When I begin working, most of what I earn will go into savings. I don't want to blow every dime on material goods. I'd rather work less hours, spend more time with my kids and have a bigger nest egg.

" I barely buy one per year"
me too and still have too many as I tend to keep them for a long time.

Mmy definition of buying a bag consists of picking up one that I think is cute while on my way to checkout at Target. This happens maybe once a year and generally after my birthday when I''m carrying a gift card. I get my fix by living vicariously through PS shoppers'' purchases...and occasionally helping people find things to purchase, which is all the adventure of shopping for yourself but without swiping the credit card, so maybe that prevents me from buying any more!

I probably only buy one or two a year, my recent Vera Bradley binge notwithstanding, as that was atypical behavior for me.

I only buy 1 bag a year. I do have a few friends who buy several inexpensive bags a year (they like changing things up with their outfits). I won't be buying a bag right now unless it is on sale and I have to have it. I already have too much stuff as it is though.

Define handbags

I have a TJ Max next to a sub shop that I would visit about 4 times a week for lunch. And if I had time I''d stop by to check out purses and shoes. So yes, I would say that I probably purchased 4-5 bags (if not more) a year. But then again the bags are $15 to $40

Probably 2 a year for me. I used to buy more in years past. Nothing really to do with the economy, just that I''ve found other things to put my money into.

Don''t most of us have too much stuff? My recent move put everything in perspective for me and I''m trying to retrain myself to downsize. Just because someone is financially stable, doesn''t mean they need to buy excessive amounts of anything. . .so much that they do not have an opportunity to wear it all! I bought some cashmere and also wool sweaters last year and I have no where to wear them. I wish I has used that $ to buy new dishes instead. lol

I have two handbags and two work messenger bags. Last time I bought a handbag was in summer 2006. I refuse to carry a handbag. I take my work bag to work and my husband everywhere else, he has larger pockets than I do.

Well when I clean out my closet, I realize how many bags I have that I completely forgot about!

Maybe 1 per year.

I used to collect vintage clutches, but that was before gems took over my life.

I only buy one handbag a year and sometimes not even one. I tend to use the ones I have for quite a while. I can''t imagine buying 4-5 a year. The economy won''t affect my decision to buy or not buy.

I have two purses...total. One black, one brown. I probably buy one every 3-5 years. I''m just not into handbags.

Couldn''t agree more about having too much stuff! I lead a pretty pared down existence, and I still feel we have too much stuff. We recycle a lot of old things and make them new. It''s a lot of fun to fix up furniture and an old house!
I like old things anyway--including handbags.

I usually get 2 cheap (as in $25 or less)bags a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. I hate changing over my purses so I tend to carry the same one for months on end unless it is a special occasion.

I have two coach bags - one functional, one fun. They''ve both lasted 2 years and I''m sure they''ll last me many more. I''m also not really into bags; as long as they carry my stuff and are in good shape, I''m good to go!

One, sometimes two, if that. It used to be more, but I''ve gotten to the point that I have one in every color and size that I really need to go with everything in my wardrobe. Since I buy mostly classic styles (and mostly Coach bags - so if they wear out, they can be sent out for repair), I''ll carry the same bags for years.

I used to buy a couple of inexpensive ones a year I guess. Hubby finally agreed to let me get an LV Speedy since I told him it would last a really long time. So that was my only purse purchase this past year other than a clearanced Kate Spade tote bag for the plane/school. I don''t plan on buying another one for quite a while!

I also buy only 1 or 2 per year... if that. Depends on the seasons and fashions but I have never been a handgag/purse girl

Wellllll, I'm not sure if I count for anything as I only recently started buying "grown up" bags. Before last year, I had bought one "real" bag (not super cheap fall-apart from forever 21 or target types) ever, which was a coach bag that I'm currently trying to get rid of.

So last year I bought 3 bags--2 real "handbag" types (durable, long-lasting, leather), and one canvas beach-bag type of handbag. This year I've bought 4--3 high quality, in varying sizes, and one beat-up kinda bag. 3 are great for everyday, and the rest of them serve really different purposes. I still use all but one of those bags, and I think I will for years to come. So I think I'm still in "building my bag wardrobe" mode. I doubt that I'll buy more than 2 per year from now on, unless I come into a LOT of dispensable income.

Someone on the purse forum said that in LA, all you need is a couple of nice jewelry pieces and a great handbag-then you can wear ripped up jeans and a wifebeater tank and you'll still look "high-end"

I guess I've taken that to heart!

ok i am BAD!! i usually get any where from 3-8 bags designer bags a year. but now that i have a son, i don''t get too many bags, but i just got 3 chanel bags within 2 months. i LOVE bags and if they are within my budget, i will continue to buy them. we save every month and we have things we need and want and my son has everything, so as long as those are taken care of, i will get a bag if our budget allows.

I''ve gotten 3 new bags in the past year. I''m not buying less bags b/c of the economy, but b/c SO is in school, I will probably buy more bags after he graduates.

I probably buy 2-3 pricy-ish handbags a year. Rebecca Minkoff, Marc by Marc, etc. I once went a little bonkers and got a Marc Jacobs Stam bag but that was only once!

Last year I went on a bit of a binge but usually just 2-3 a year. I carry one bag for a few months and then change so it doesn't make sense for me to buy a ton. Or at least that's what I try to tell myself to prevent myself from spending way too much money!

ETA I'm pretty sure I've only bought 2 bags this year so far.

I probably buy 2 a year, MAYBE 3. But then some years I might only buy one. It really depends on how my old ones are holding up and whether my needs have changed. I also sell them frequently if I am not using them, so I usually only have 4-5 in my entire collection at any one time.

When I was working, I bought two or three expensive designer bags per year (with the seasons). Now I usually get one per year as a gift from my husband, and I use it exclusively until the next year.

None. I get them as gifts and hand-me-downs and use ''em until they break.

I''m not really a purse girl.

luckily for me my wife don''t like handbags. i bought her a Chanel handbag a few years ago it is sitting in the closet NIB collecting dust.
