Some diamond mountings on the market are termed "18ct yellow gold", but use platinum claws for the diamond.

I''d normally go for no lower than H-I colour in yellow gold (no lower than F-G for platinum), but I''m wondering if all of the yellow-tint masking properties of the yellow gold would be lost because of the platinum mount within a yellow gold piece of jewellery.

In such instances, how low would you go on the colour?

Thanks,
FB

Have you ever seen a well cut H or I in platinum?

If you have, i doubt you''d be seeing the color difference between the stone and metal (I''m talking face up).

I know some experts believe that a lower color stone should be set in yellow gold, but i find that the yellow brings out the color more than hides it.

As I understand it, there is not a set rule because everyone has different color tolerance and preference. If you want to know what YOU like, go compare some in person. Keep in mind a beautifully cut I will face up whiter than an average cut H. I believe platinum is preferred for the prongs because it''s more secure.

What would you set a lower colored stone (J and lower) in?

I always thought yellow gold enhances the warmth in warmer colored stones, not mask it...

I agree! My personal experience with an I (round brilliant) in plat is favorable. Looks nice and white; no one (outside PS, that is) would ever assume ''I'' color.
