checks you deposited online?
Mortgage statements?

If I had either of those things I would keep them:
90 days
7 years

Hard copy checks we keep no longer than a week. Because when we see the funds have been accepted we do not need them anymore.

Mortgage statements only exist for us online. No paper.
And soon no mortgage statements at all woohoo.:appl:

I will add my dh takes care of all of this so I am just sharing what he does since this is not my area. @Karl_K you are old school and if I was managing our bills etc I would probably be more like you. Just glad I don't have to deal with this stuff at all.

Some of my online accounts with paperless statements still offer monthly statements in pdf form, so where appropriate I periodically download those PDFs to my own computer for long-term storage.

Checks—a few days after deposit has been accepted.

Bank statements—all online, I download as necessary

Cheques only a few days after deposit has been accepted. Unless they are for my business, in which case I keep them for 7 years as part of my tax file (as I have to document both income and expenses in case of audit).

I throw my mortgage statements out as soon as I look at them as I have all that information online. But we are not allowed to claim the interest as a tax deduction like I think you are in the US. If you are claiming it as an income tax deduction (or use of part of your house as a home office), you'd need to keep those records for 7 years for tax purposes. You'd hate to be audited and not have it available.

Checks I usually keep for a week before getting rid of them but I always take a picture before I do.
Mortgage statements for however long I have space for them.

Thanks everyone! I just always question what to keep and what to shred. I think I do have an option of online mortgage statements. My retirement accounts are all paper but bank are online. I hate the clutter but I would hate not to have something I may need.
