How long could/ would you wear a temp setting?

In the fall time I had a bit of a setting saga  and had to get a temporary 6 prong setting right before the wedding because nothing else would fit! Well, I love how the prongs were done on it (they are pointy and not blobby). But I am super self conscious about the setting. It looks like a toy setting from the side! My problem is that I'm not entirely sure how I want to set it. It went from a 3 stone to a solitaire but after seeing a thread about haloing a 3 carat.. I'm having the "I could do that!" thought.

Anyway, I've had this temp setting since mid-october now. Should I just get any setting or wait until I know what I want? Do you think anyone else even notices the setting? I seriously get so embarrassed about the setting.

And another side with the wedding band..

I would wear it until I was absolutly sure what I wanted!

I keep switching from solitaire to solitaire with side stones in the band, to a halo with or w/o side stones. :errrr: I think I might stop into a store in January and do some serious thinking.

aww bean! I"m not one to give advice on settings  as I've switched out settings more than I can remember :errrr: Its a good idea for you to try on some settings in store, as I see rings look great online, but once I got it on my finger, It looks way different. I also have slowly evolved on what I didn't like five years ago, I now LOVE.

D&T, I totally think about you and your settings when I think of the multiple settings and looks that I like! I sometimes feel I might just need a few rings for when I'm in the mood for a certain look

lol...I've done way to many setting changes  I really like y our idea on the "few" rings for different looks, I"m just a bit weird in that on my ering finger, I can only wear ONE set (so I have to find the perfect set)... but as for RHRs it can change :naughty:

If you have a halo, and didn't like it, the nice thing with the halo, is I think it looks STUNNING with colored stones as a RHR...

If you switch out to another solitaire setting with sidestones, you might not like enough or its not a drastic change enough for you, and you might linger for the halo still just my opinion though.

My thought process seems to be, if one is going to change, GO BIg, and if it doesn't work out,, you always have a FABULOUS RHR :cheeky:

Can you buy some cheap CZ sterling silver versions of the ones you like and wear them around for a while. Maybe one
will stand out for you. I understand what you are going through. I keep thinking I want to reset my ering
but can decide if I want halo, 3 stone, matching ring to 5 stone band or shared prong 3/4 eternity setting. I guess I
should take my own advice but I think it might be hard to find cheap pear cut stones in these settings (havent looked though).

I agree with this. That's what I would do. I'd also take her advice and get some cheapy fake rings to wear around for awhile and see what you really like- get a solitaire, 3 stone and halo. You can get decent looking ones for next to nothing at Nordstrom. I got a cushion halo from there to wear around my house to make sure I really want a halo (I do! ) That REALLY helped me make up my mind. Looking at pictures is really different than wearing something. Kinda like a dress looking pretty on the hanger but not so much once you get it on. :cheeky:

And no I don't think the setting looks bad at all- besides no one is looking at the setting- I'm sure once anyone catches a glimpse of your awesome rock they stop there and get hypnotized! :sun:  I think it's a good enough setting til you decide what you really want.

I would wait until you know exactly what you want. Imagine the $ you would spend on another ring (which would be basically be an upgraded temporary ring) on instead getting a pair of diamond studs or something! ;)

You should wait and get what you really want. But, embarrassed? This is the setting I've worn for the past 16 years and have no intention of changing.............

Don't be embarrassed about your ring. It is a classic solitaire, and honestly, no one gets that close to look and most people really don't care. IMHO, the purpose of the setting is to hold the diamond, so keep your diamond clean, and it will be the focus.

You can keep that temp setting for years, so don't feel rushed to pick out something permanent.

As someone who has changed their setting many, many, many times (too many) wait until you get the one you are 100% sure about. If you go with a halo but then decide it's too blingy, or pave is too high maintenence, and switch your diamond out again, you'll lose major money on the halo setting.

Go to stores that have several settings, Jared's usually has a variety (but go after the holidays when their on hand inventory has been restocked after the holidays). As for how long to wear a temp. setting, that's up to you! There's no rule for how short or long you have to wear a temp.

FWIW, your setting doesn't look like a toy ring to me at all! But it doesn't go with your wedding band either, IMO. A halo would look stunning wih your wedding band, or a ring with sidestones!

I would definitely wait until you know what you want. I've had my "temp" setting for about 7 months now and I finally decided what I am going to switch to. Like you I went around all over the place and finally someone got me thinking about bezels and I now know I am going to do a double bezel for my stone. It will satisfy my desires and still fit my lifestyle.

For the record I don't think you should be embarassed by your setting at all. Mine isn't too terribly different than yours in style and I am not embarassed in the least by it since a simple solitaire like that is so classic! So don't let that be your driving force for your change.

Thank you everyone! I feel a bit better. Tonight I went and got a mani, and on that same block (fly girl knows what I'm talking about-- hint hint lol) there are THREE jewelry stores in this new area! I went into one and looked at some halo settings but it was so hard to get an idea of what a larger stone would look like since they all looked like half carat stones. I also got the impression that they don't really do custom work and was quoted an insane setting of the stone fee.

Looking at the halos though, I just am even more confused. I didn't love them as much on my finger. So... yes I think getting some different styles (cheapies) to try out to see what I like. So far I think solitaire is winning.. but who knows!! LOL

Thanks again and happy holidays :D

I don't know if you are planning on using an online vendor, but Eternity Diamonds sends out their sample rings!

I wore mine for over 4 years. :cheeky: Until I figured out exactly what I wanted and saved up for it.

Keep your temp until you get what you want. Your stone is stunning. I doubt anyone registers anything about your setting outside of the fact that it holds that beautiful rock!

I don't think anyone pays attention to a classic solitaire setting. The ENTIRE focus is on that diamond! I think you shoudl wear it until you find exactly what

It is a utilitarian but perfectly serviceable solitaire setting :)) I think, one that so many people see so often that nobody pays it any attention - like PPs said, all the focus is on the boulder! So definitely don't do anything drastic(ally pricey) until you figure out exactly what you want ::)

I wore a simple temp setting for two years. We had a long engagment and it really didnt bother me, although I was glad when I found a setting I loved. I had plenty of time to look :D

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your current setting - it is a classic setting. I absolutely would not feel embarrassed by it at all.

You went from a three stone to a solitaire and even though your stone is substantial, I'm sure you feel a bit naked! However, in all honesty, haloing a three carat stone will give you a massive ring. I'd think long and hard on doing that as it may be a bit over the top. As you said, most of the halo rings feature a much smaller center stone than what you have but look at the many threads here before and after a halo setting. The size difference after a halo is substantial and quite beautiful for many size stones. However, your stone is already quite large so again, I'd be real sure I would want to sport that look before putting $$ into it that you probably won't get back out if you decide you don't like the look.

Just keep looking. You will usually find that special setting when you're not looking that hard. You have a gorgeous stone and I wouldn't want to overshadow it or wash it out with extra setting. Some people actually consider the setting to just be something to hold a diamond and don't want it over embellished. If I found a setting I really liked, I'd try to have the jeweler use another three carat stone or cz to set on top of it to give you an idea of what the finished product would look like.

In the meantime, enjoy that stone. It really is a beauty and that solitaire setting should only make you feel proud. Really!
