How important are front and back diamonds? :(

I found a really cool setting. Actually it apparently is new, and I found it at two different stores, so I wonder if there is a way I could find that online. Anyway, it doesn''t have small diamonds on the front and the back! Yes it has them on the top side, but its just metal on the front and back. Do girls even like just metal? Sure I could engrave something, but I can''t think of ANYthing to engrave it to where it looks very nice and elegant.

Why would they do that. ..

lots of people like the look of metal...just depends.
 
if you stare at the hole in the ring, thats the front and the back, sometimes they put diamonds there

I don''t know the terms, but if you can see the whole circle, you are looking through the hole where the finger goes. That being said, sometimes there are diamonds on the top side of that circle underneath the big diamond. I''m not talking about all the regular side diamonds you see from a blimp view.

some have them going all the way around, and some have them half way around...is this what you are referring to?
 
i think that's called peek-a-boo diamonds or.. surprise diamonds. (heard them from jewellry stores)

The setting I wanted to get in the first place has diamonds like that. I had no idea what the term is until someone told me. I think they're super cool. Classic but not too classic.

When you see diamonds on all three sides, it is usually called 3-sided pave. When it is on one side, it is called 1-sided pave but it could also be channel set or some different way the diamonds are put there. Many people like 1-sided pave because it is more pratical for daily wear. 3-sided can scratch other things.

I personally don't need anything engraved there - I like the look of the smooth metal.

Ditto, I think this is what he means too, and I also prefer to have diamonds only on the top and smooth sides. You cannot or should not wear a wedding band next to three-sided pave, which is why a lot of women prefer not to have diamond on the front and back.

CharmyPoo and Dreamer are so smart :) if OP is indeed talking about 3 sided pave I would say that the "front" and "back" diamonds are not important at all, but it is a matter of personal preference.
 
It actually sounds like he''s talking about the side view on the shank closest the finger, still visible when worn on the hand but not when viewed from above, more or less the face of the stones being aligned with the prongs edges.

Personally, I don''t like plain settings that look ''boring'' from the side. From what the nice lady at the last B&M store told me, girls tend to look at their diamonds by holding their hand out in front of them with the back of their hand flat towards their face, whereas guys tend to hold it out with their palm aligned with the floor (viewing it from the side).

My girlfriend prefers pretty sides as well, and I must say, 95% of settings have an ugly side. I''ve spent forever trying to find one that was beautiful from this angle. Yet to no avail.

Anyone else noticed the same about how men/women tend to look at rings?
 
I think the side view is important, as well as the top video, but I don''t prefer a setting with diamonds on the band of the side view.

I think this may be an example of what you are talking about with "front and back diamonds" where the first link I posted was only "diamonds on the top"

really it is a matter of personal preference but I prefer the look of metal.

also there are some settings with 1 ''surprise'' diamond, that you can see from the side view, but not the entire band is pave

I think they call them surprise diamonds.

They don't do anything for me.
I'd rather put that money towards a better main diamond.

That''s what I meant (the picture with the small diamond below the larger one), I thought ''surprise diamonds'' meant the ones on the inside of the band you can''t see at all.

The profile view is very important to me which is why I haven''t been able to decide on my setting for so long.

i think surprise diamonds can mean both things?
 
i believe diamonds or other gems flush set inside the band are ''hidden'' and the ones in the photo above are ''surprise''. The profile or ''side'' view is very important to me with my rings and weighs heavily on how i choose a design-as has been pointed out, this is primarily the view by which the woman will admire her ring. I am still confused to what the OP is referring,because if it is one sided pave (or prong or channel set) as Charmy bought up,this is not a new style..it would be helpful to answer the question if souled in can establish if any of the styles posted match his ring?

I like surprise diamonds generally. There are quite a few settings that have them. The thing to watch for is the quality of the diamonds and the even-ness of the bezels around them. I love bezeled diamonds and have a few pieces with bezelled diamonds in them but I am picky as heck about the bezel work. My Kraiko diamond earrings drive me batty when I take them off because the bezels aren''t perfect. My BGD bezels on my pendant are perfect and I love to stare at them. Sorry... I meandered away from your question. I think that if the ring is otherwise appealing they add something lovely. The profile of your ring what you stare at a lot of the time, so having a nice profile is imporant... the profile of my ring is perfect for me, and if it wasn''t... I just wouldn''t like my ring as much (in the design sense, not in the sentimental sense).

My favorite ring with diamonds in the profile, just as a suggestion is the Mark Morrel Torchiere http://www.mwmjewelry.com/T_M_Torchiere/ These aren''t surprise diamonds btw, just call them "diamonds in the head of the ring"

I''m pretty sure I know what you are talking about. When I was looking at settings recently the jeweler I went to referred to it as a profile view. Whether that is universal or not, I just know she said it. She was big on seeing stones and work done on that angle. Me? I am not really interested in the side shots like that. I don''t like surprise diamonds as I don''t ever really view my ring from that way. So the answer is some love it and some don''t care. IMO you don''t need diamonds there and if there aren''t, it isn''t a flaw. It''s just a preference. If you like everything else about a setting, I''d be perfectly fine with a "bare" area like that.

The picture Pave Princess is accurate. I can see the confusion, in that I might have meant the diamonds that go "underneath the ''view from the top''" around the side etc...

BUT, what I meant was the 3 sided pave, thank you for the term

I just assumed girls would like some surprise or hidden diamonds on the profile sides. The two jewelry stores I''ve went to have a lot of them with small diamonds on the upper half. Kind of like Pave Princess''s but not the entire way down.

Anyway, I asked her last night if those diamonds were important to her and she said they weren''t.

I suppose simple with just white gold on the 3rd side looks classy?

I WISH I could find that ring online, since both stores have it, I know they are getting it from some kind of distributor, I just wish I could find it and post it.

It is pretty delicate and not too wide, there are only one layer of small diamonds going down the side about half way.

However it is inside milgrain, which I like a lot.

The thing that gives this ring its biggest style, though, is that in the middle of the side diamonds, one of the small diamonds is put in a milgrained circle.

So you can picture the setting from the top, half way down the side one of the diamonds has an extra layer around it sticking up of milgrain.

When I saw it it reminded me of mickey mouse, because it is like this

You really need to ask HER what she wants. Personally, I''d much prefer a solitaire and wouldn''t really want a ring with any pave or sidestones. Other girls want three sided pave with surprise diamonds and hidden diamonds. Its really just personal preference and none of us can answer for her.
