In the spirit of DF''s handwriting thread (and because this is an internet forum), how fast can you type?

Do you use all of your fingers correctly? Or just tap with a couple fingers?

I'll start.

I type maybe 85-90wpm, since I had a few years of typing class in school and type a lot in general. People at work make fun of me for it sometimes and say I'm not really typing, just hitting the keys really fast and pretending to type

I hated all of the typing classes, but when I watch people at work type things with one finger at a time, I'm glad I was forced to do it! And hey, if this engineering thing doesn't work out, maybe I could get a job typing documents from dictation (does that job even exist anymore?)

ETA: Woo, just got in the upper 90s for the first time in years on the typing test. I so wish this skill was useful in my job. Hah

I used to be able to type upwards of 60 words a minute. I am guessing, I can still do that, but would have to take a timed test.

Kaleigh (and anyone else who wants to), you can go to www.typingtest.com and take a test to see. Sometimes my friends and I do it as a competition when we''re bored at work

I do type properly courtesy of the mandatory freshman computer class I had in hs. I think the mandatory class is given at a much younger age now, because I think this is something that older people struggle a lot with if they learn to type incorrectly first and then have to relearn. I personally can''t imagine ever going back to the hunt and peck type of typing though.

I remember from that class that I used to be able to punch out a little over 100 wpm. I''ve found some typing games online since then (I''m such a dork but I find them fun!) and if they don''t count errors, I can still get close to that, but if they do count errors I''m more like 80-90.

I don''t type "correctly", I use all my fingers though. But I do tend to favor my pointers :) I type ridiculously fast though, something like 200wpm

Wha?! That''s crazy fast! I would love to see that in person. I couldn''t even think fast enough to need to type at 200wpm

74 wpm net, 77 wpm gross, according to the link! I don't do much typing outside of PS. Back in my AIM days, I think I typed faster, but who knows!

This is the fastest video I could find with <20 seconds of poking around on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc6rp--SCTk

If that''s 139wpm, I think my brain would explode watching MP do 200wpm!

I type fast enough, but not necessarily ''properly.''

I do use all my fingers, not just the pointers.

57 words per minute and I use all my fingers!

Took the test and it said 77wpm gross 70wpm net. I use all my fingers and don''t look at the keyboard as I type, but I never took an official typing class so I''m not sure if I do it "correctly" - but as long as the words get on the screen, I don''t care!

LOL I certainly can''t do it for long! I might have cheated though - I did the online test and I knew the paragraph already so it made it pretty darn quick not having to look at the words lol.

I just did it again now, and I barely cleared 118. Maybe I was caffienated that day or something lol.

Probably 60wpm on a good day, 50 or so normally (I got a 61, 57 net on the type test on my laptop--could probably do better on a real keyboard). Nothing in my job requires much typing.

Threadjack alert! musey, that new avatar is cool!

I just did the test and got 55 wpm, 100% accuracy. When I took typing way back when in HS I think I was more around 70 wpm.

I learned to type in a Catholic Convent School. Day one of Grade 9, all 30 of the girls in my home room (there were no boys....) were put into typing class. Manual typewriters with NO LETTERS ON THE KEYS. The typing teacher started us with just basic exercises. We had to type in unison to a metronome.

5 years of this, every single day.

By Grade 13, we were all typing in unison over 80 wpm.

I always wonder how people learn now.....

So I just did it again (this thing is addictive)

I did it again and got 71 gross, 69 wpm net. It probably doesn''t help I''ve had a glass of wine

My results from the typing test website:

Net Speed: 74 WPM
(words/minute)
Accuracy: 98%
Gross Speed: 75 WPM
(words/minute)

Gross 102
Net 98

That was fun!

Wow, everyone here is so fast. I was really pushing on that test and making considerable typos (which is my normal typing style though

) and hit 79. If I actually try to type accuratly I can only make about 50

Hmmmmm..... took the typing test.

Avg 60wpm with 96% accuracy.

I do type using the correct "form"- learned it my freshman year of high school- on a real typewriter. When my brother was a freshman about 9 years later and taking typing, I asked what kind of typewriter he had. He looked at me like I had three heads and informed me it was all done on computer now.

Oh hey, thanks jet2ks!

MonkeyPie, I type a LOT faster when it's my own words than in a typing test. I'd imagine that's true of most people. So it makes sense that the paragraph you knew would come out faster!

So which is your true typing speed, the one typing random words or the one typing words coming from your own head?

I learned to type in 6th grade, and our whole class had manual typewriters (high-fives, LostSapphire!). I''ll have to take that test, but I''m sure I''m pretty slow. A mom of 4 kids really only needs to email and pricescope. Also, my speed and accuracy depends a lot on how long my fingernails are.

I didn''t think there was anyone under the age of 55 who didn''t take typing in school? You mean there are young peeps who hunt and peck? WTH, did they not realize it was a computer world

I''m 56 and I type at least 70 wpm the "correct" way
2.gif
. I don''t think I''ve ever had a job since the 70''s that didn''t require "some" typing.

I just did the test! 71 words per minute net and the same for gross.

100% accuracy!!

People have always told me I type fast and I never believe them...I guess I do (but not nearly as much as some of the PSers!! MP....

!!)

I definitely do not type appropriately haha. Oh well, it gets the job done. I am going to try the test later though; I am on the laptop now and that makes typing more complicated!

OK I''m not ANCIENT or anything, but this is a fun pic:

This picture taken about 100 years ago shows a group of young girls practicing typing on early models of manual typewriters.

In my high school, typing was an elective! It was considered one of the "easy As" classes.

I type too fast for my own good... I tend to multitask, phone calls and typing (many many mistakes)

I''m thinking that I probably type closer to the 118, but even that seems high to me judging by the rest of you. Maybe 100?
