I just started my hunt for engagement rings. Been reading a ton of stuff. It''s almost overwhelming the amount of information that is out there on diamonds. I stumbled upon the website of niceice, and I was wondering what you guys thought of this diamond here?

http://www.niceice.com/certcopies2009/gia2101631749/index.htm

Looking at the ASET image, it''s not quite symmetrical. Does that matter in terms of how the diamond will look? Is it something even noticeable? Also, comparing that diamond to the one here:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/Whiteflash-ACA-cut-diamond-2113975.htm#

The whiteflash diamond has a large green area in the center of the diamond, while the niceice diamond lacks that. Is that something that is a plus/minus? Or is it just something that will change the "character" of the diamond.

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I''m trying to quantify all of this information. Looking at diamonds at shops has really helped me see the difference between ideal cut diamonds and non ideal cuts. I was really wow''ed when I saw some HOF diamonds. And then I almost pooped my pants when I saw the price tag attached =). But seeing differences on paper between two ideal cut diamonds has been harder for me to make sense of.

Thanks.

Hi Hippo,

First the green area in the ASET. It just depends if the pavilion angle is above or below some number. In one case you get red, in another case you get green. It''s nothing to worry about with this particular diamond you are looking at. You can probably find Whiteflash and NiceIce diamonds where the center is green and some where the center is red. Nothing to worry about.

Second, the image not being symmetrical. The image is computer generated based on a scan of the diamond. The scan can have errors (dust, diamond being tilted, scanner doesn''t pick up edges,...) and those will show up in the computer generated image. Ask NiceIce about it.

Hope this helps. The diamond is fine.

Welcome!

Both great diamonds, I can tell you both vendors have extremely high standards so you can purchase with confidence.

For those who might not be aware of it, I own NiceIce.com even though I post here on Price Scope under the flag of Wink''s High Performance Diamonds which we''re co-promoting at the moment. I want to be clear about that so that people know that I''m commenting on a thread pertaining to a diamond from our Nice Ice inventory and don''t think I''m trying to be sly or something inappropriate (those of us who have been on PS for awhile know all the names, but people new to the forum might not, so...)

Here is some insight into the ASET from the Nice Ice web site and from the AGS web site:

The Ideal Scope is designed to demonstrate where light might be leaking through a diamond, but the different colors provided by the ASET image show the angles from which the diamond gathers light:

Green = 0° (the horizon) to 45°
Red = 45° to 75°
Blue = 75° to 90°
Black or White indicates leakage.

WHAT THE COLORS MEAN:

Red represents light coming from angles where there is likely to be bright, direct sources of illumination in most viewing environments. This color is dominant in the ASET image of a well-cut diamond.

Blue corresponds to light that normally is blocked by the viewer’s head and body. An ASET image with a moderate amount of this color in an attractive pattern means the diamond has good contrast.

Green is produced by low-angle light, which usually is reflected from walls or other objects in the surrounding area (rather than coming from direct sources). A diamond with a high cut quality may show small amounts of this color around the bezel area of the ASET image.

Note that when Red and Green areas appear mixed together in the center region of the diamond (above the culet) this simply indicates a kind of crossover between the sources of illumination within the realm of the 45° viewing angle.

Black or White appears in areas that do not return light under real-life viewing conditions. If a diamond is well cut, the ASET image will show only very small areas of black or white around the outer edge (and perhaps none).
