She doesnt have any rings believe it or not. What can I do as I am considering ordering from an online vendor in the states as a suprise for her (she doesnt have any flashy jewlery). I am in Australia.
You can also play around with her hand against yours to get an idea of the size. While not as accurate as getting the finger sized it may get you in the ball park and you can later resize the ring.
Whatever you do, you’re going to be guessing and there's a fairly good chance you'll guess wrong, so plan on getting it resized after it arrives. Maybe you'll get lucky but don't bet on it. Make sure to pick a design where this is going to be a reasonable option. With the right design it’s usually not all that difficult. It’s a common job and if you’ve got a local jeweler they should be able to help you out. Ask the seller this question.
I’ve always found that it’s better to err toward the too slightly big rather than too small. At least that way she can slip it on and see how it looks immediately after your presentation rather than putting it on a different finger or out on the knuckle. The statistically average woman is a 6 ½-7. 9 is pretty big, 4 is pretty small. You can usually guess to within a size or so simply by looking at her hands and asking yourself if they’re ‘average’, a little big, a little small, huge, tiny or whatever.
It may be helpful to visit a jeweler and size your own fingers as comparison. Usually jewelers have a few women working there who won't mind you looking at their hands and telling you THEIR ring size as a comparison.
Here is what I did and it worked perfectly:
Go to the mall/maul with her for whatever purpose you contrive. Wander into jewelry stores, direct her attention to some items of jewelry. Behind her back, motion to the staff with your fingers (watch for obscene gestures hehehe) to get her ring size for you. They will bring out their sizer.
