We just purchased a diamond from WF...it''s s stunner by the way. It''s not an ACA but seems the same...the only difference is that it wasn''t cut by WF. Anyhow, I''m just wondering how other people''s similar diamonds appraised...
This one is a 2.39 J SI1 with great specs (you can search "2.39 isabel" and you''ll probably find the thread with more info if you want)...we paid $14700 and I''m just curious about
1)whether is was a great deal
2)how the appraisal thing works...I heard they base the price on what they would sell for in a B & M
Isabel, I didn''t have my WF stones reappraised. I insured them for the purchase price, which is what I have in them and what I would have to pay to replace them. I didn''t want an inflated appraisal. I really didn''t see the need for another appraisal since I already had so much information on the stone from WF plus the AGS certs which are an independent evaluation of the stones.
When you buy a stone that was from a supplier rather than a WF stone, you can easily compare prices in the search tool here because virtual stones are often listed my multiple vendors. They have to be competitive on the price or they wouldn''t sell them. So I wouldn''t be particularly concerned about overpaying at all.
If you were just wanting to be sure your stone matches the cert, then you can take it to anyone who does appraisals and just tell them you want a verbal confirmation that the stone is the one in the cert.
Thanks so much Diamondseeker. I guess I''m a little worried because his brother had a ring "designed" about a year ago. One of the appraisals almost doubled what he paid. The other one was much closer to the actual cost. I guess I just thought that since we were buying online instead of a B & M, the appraisal would be higher because diamonds are priced lower here.
Why do you want a high appraisal? It just means you end up paying more in insurance premiums. If you bought a ring today at $7500, and it was stolen today, you could go right back out and buy that same ring for the same amount of money. The high appraisals game is just that...a game.
If you want a feel for whether or not you got a good deal, go search the Pricescope vendor inventory...see what similar diamonds have gone for.
My appraisal, which was done by one of the Pricescope member appraisers, wasn''t based on what B&M stores charge, but what I could reasonably replace the ring for.
WF will send you an insurance appraisal with an inflated amount when they send you the ring as many of the vendors will do. But I did not want to pay an insurance premium on an inflated amount, so I used the sales receipt and the certs for the insurance instead.
I recently bought a .55 J SI1 ACA from WF. I paid about $1100 for it with the PS discount. While I was debating whether I got a good deal and whether to keep it, I brought it to a respected jewelry in my area and ask whether they''d be able to find me something comparable for a similar price. After looking at the stone, they told me that they wouldn''t be able to offer me anything below $2500, and that I got a great deal.
While the price range of my stone is much lower than yours, it does seem the WF prices are quite good for the quality of the stones.
Hope this helps!
