How did I do for this 1.48 G SI2

So how do you guys think I did. What do you think this diamond is worth. Its a 1.48 carat SI-2 G. Measures 7.26x7.42x4.47.
Table is 62%, crown angle 35 degrees, crown percent 14%. The girdle is very think to medium bruted and the cutlet is very small. The pavilion is 43% and the pavilion angle is 40.8 degrees, Symmetry is good and polish is very good. Faint blue fluorescence.

Impossible to say. SI2 might be eye-clean or might be far from it. Who graded it and do you have a report number? EGL reports are more suspect (considered softer) than GIA or AGS. What cut grade did the lab give it?

HCA gives it about a 3.1 Vg/VG/G/Vg, so there are definitely better-cut stones out there. Thick girdle makes it face up smaller diameter than what PS likes to see for that weight. Thick girdle + bruted, not polished, would be less desirable to many people because the bruted finish just calls attention to the thickness.

You can search through the PS database for similar specs and use maybe a cut grade of good or fair and see what prices it comes up with.

If you're unhappy with the look of it or the price was too high for what the stone is, and able to return it, you might want to post your budget and let PS people help you locate a better-cut stone.

As stated above by TC, the HCA is a rejection tool. With a score of 3.1 it should be rejected unless the price is unbelievable.
If you give your budget and parameters to fellow PSers on this forum, they will search for a much better stone for you.
Best of luck

I guess the cut isn't the greatest.... but it does have a nice shine. It came with an appraisal it was ungraded. I think I got a good deal after looking around. I got it for $5500. There was a similar stone I was interested in GIA graded excellent cut 1.36 L in color, but that was going for $6300 so I thought this was the better deal. Its eye clean. You can see one inclusion with the loop, but other than that its really clean.

I am going to send it into EGL to be graded before its mounted.

What shape stone is this? If it's a round, it's very "out of round" ( Measures 7.26x7.42x4.47). Is it an old cut? Because in that case the HCA is worthless. Old cuts are cut to a different proportion.

If it's a modern RB, HCA = 3.1 = reject.

And for gosh sakes *why* would you send it to EGL knowing they will grade "softer" than GIA / AGS? A GIA stone will almost always be graded lower in color and clarity. For example, an EGL H could be a GIA J/K/L. And an EGL SI2 is almost guaranteed to be a GIA I1-I2.

You aren't getting a "deal" by going with EGL. You are getting what you pay for. If you pay a lower price for an EGL stone, it's comparable to an equivalently (accurately) graded GIA / AGS. (ex: EGL H SI2 = GIA J/K I1-I2)

If this is a modern RB, you can do MUCH better. Move along.

Unfortunately, there is no moving along since it has been paid for. I shopped around quite a bit and this is the cleanest clearest 1.5 for the price.

The diamond is for an engagement ring. So as long as it looks better than what I have seen ill be happy. I was sending it to EGL just to have a laser inscription so I can have something to identify it with.

It was purchased though a jewelry shop that brokered the deal from a private seller. So I just want a lab to authenticate the appraisal.

I don't think its a modern cut. The jewelry shop owner told me it did, but the owner said it was his wifes engagement ring from a previous marriage. He is about 50, so I assume the diamond was cut atleast 30 years ago.

and yes its a round diamond

Well you got your answers from here and you're keeping your stone anyway. Enjoy your engagement!

Well, my main question was did I do alright for $5500? I thought I got a decent deal compared to the prices I have seen for similar stones.

It is hard to comment b/c we don't know the color nor the clarity of this stone... :read: however, I can tell you that it is not a well cut stone... ::)

Well,

I had taken the ring into a diamond buyer just to get his input on the diamond. He told me the ring looked like it was about 50 years old. So I am assuming the diamond was cut around that time period. I am not sure the time period of the transitional cut diamonds. Perhaps this is one of them.

Also I decided to have it graded by GIA. Sent it in today. I know they are relocating so hopefully this doesn't delay the results. For consumers its usually a 2 week turn around right?

EGL is worth less than toilet paper, because with toilet paper at least you can wipe your ass with it.

"It was his wife's ER from a previous marriage", did he have a bridge to sell you also?
If it was cut 30 years ago, they did not have the technology and tools of today to cut, so you are probably right, it is a lousy cut.
Most people on this forum will say that cut is the most important part.
It really doesn't matter what you paid for it, you already bought it. Enjoy it and wear it in good health.
One more point: The age-old axiom applies to diamonds "you get what you pay for"---there are no deals!

If the stone is mounted how did you get the proportion #s?

I'm hoping for your sake that it is a Tranny or an OEC. But it's probably a badly cut MRB. Still, if you can take some pictures of it, there's a chance you could have a nice Tranny.

Well,

My total budget is $7,000. I was doing the best I could on this budget and after looking around for 2 weeks this seems like the best I could do for a round near colorless SI2 of above with a measurement of at least 7mm. I understand that if I wanted a perfect diamond I would have to pay the perfect diamond price so I went with as close as I could get. This still leaves about 2k for the setting.

I have the appraisal attached. I will update you guys when the GIA report comes back. As long as its not a fracture fill or man made diamond I think I will be satisfied.....

Maybe you can get it recut.

Well,

looks like I might have to purchase another diamond. The post office doesn't not know where my package is...and their max insurance was only $5,000.00

The time to ask us is BEFORE you commit to something.
