I was really excited when i stumbled upon a picture of the ROYAL ASSCHER and decided that was the stone i wanted to find...I have been educating myself as I go and have learned today that there is a major difference with ALL the stones i have searched that are listed as an asscher when they are actually a SQUARE EMERALD CUT ...how in the he1l do they get away with this??

Probably because "Royal Asscher" is a registered trademark for a patented design, but "Asscher" alone is not. The original Asscher cut design was created in 1905 and has long since entered the public domain. The Royal Asscher is actually a new cut.

1st thanks for your reply...

2nd so the NEW RA is the one with 74 facets

the OLD Asscher from 1905 had 58 facets like the Square Emerald Cuts that are being sold as ASSCHER...I did find one online retailer that is honest enough to list their asschers as
ASSCHER STYLE...which is what made me start to dig a little more expeditiously.

the asscher cut is actually disigned in 1902
by joseph asscher who also cut the cullinan diamond
since 6 years the royal asscher cut is a new cut based on the
old asscher cut
if you want more info please check www.asscher.nl

and thank you for your interest for any further questions

There were quite a few questions like this one in the recent past. None of the buyers insisted on getting a stone close to the "old Asscher" proportions, as soon as someone would mention what characteristics would tell an "old style" Asscher from the rest (usually "deep pavilion, high crown, small table" being cited).

It is not at all easy to find a "sample" of old Asscher cuts to draw a general impression from. What would be a good source for such information ? Were these stones cut with some 'model' in mind, or technical limitations alone determined the model ?

Just curious...

Hello, my research shows the original Asscher Cut was designed and patented (Amsterdam)in 1902 by Abraham Asscher, not in 1905.

Still, I believe the original cut is much more elegant and, well, original. It's the first of the best. What are your feelings about the two Asscher cuts?

Hi again and sorry the last didn't address your question. The Asscher cut is truly a square emerald cut. The Asscher family (Amsterdam)patented the original cut in 1902. Abraham Asscher was the inventer of this cut. The cut was only made for approx. 30 years. In 2002 celebs (especially J. Lo) made the cut popular again. The new cut has more facets. If you want a true "Asscher cut" diamond, you either have to buy antique or purchase the new "Royal Asscher cut". All Royal cuts by Asscher are laser inscribed. If not, they are not actual Asscher cuts.

Still, because of many gem cutter's love of this stone, you can find an equally beautiful stone (with a lot of research)outside of the actual Asscher gem cutter. This can save you thousands. Be aware though, actual Asscher is EXACTLY what you agree to buy. If you buy a stone that is not cut by Asscher, make sure you have a very reputable lab cert. (GIA). A "very good" or "excellent" cut and polish of a diamond is just that. Whether you spend thousands more with Asscher or you get it from a talented, diamond-loving gemologist it's the same stone without the label. Much to mull over.

I viewed several "Asscher" cut diamonds before I purchased mine. I went with the "original cut" due to it's elegance. Yes, there is a criteria which is best monitored by GIA. If you are interested in purchasing a stone, GIA cert. is highly recommended.

There are a few original stones to be purchased via estate sales and auctions. I can only imagine how hard they are to get. I would love to find one!

If you choose to go with the newer, "Art Deco" Royal Asscher, you would have to either find a VERY, VERY talented diamond-loving gem cutter (if you can settle for a stone that's equally beautiful but not name brand) or purchase from a vendor who carried the actual Royal Asscher cut. If so, ALL ARE LASER INSCRIBED. Don't let a jeweler convince you otherwise. Just a thought: try buying directly from Royal Asscher in Amsterdam. You might get a better deal without having to go through a middle man. Michelle @ QualityOnly

Actually, I believe that it was Sarah Jessica Parker's character on "Sex and the City" that made the Asscher "hot". There was the episode where she receives the ugly engagement ring, and then her friend steps in and she ends up with a honkin' Harry Winston Asscher. Reese Witherspoon and Kate Hudson have Asschers too.
