This is my million dollar question. The ring that I am looking at (which is the Precession set 7727. I will upload a pic of it as it''s not working for me right now.

I''ve found places that will sell me the engagement ring. I''ve been trying to find a stone now for weeks. I can search whiteflash.com & every other diamond site out there but it''s like I''m shooting in the dark. I can pick colors and clarity, and use sliders on websites to get me to what quality I want which makes me feel better about how it will look without being able to see it.

I''m worried......in a way....that I could purchase the ring and stone from the same place, but just because it''s a .90 G VS1 it could be a good .90 G VS1 OR a sucky one. Hopefully you can see what I mean by that.

As an example I was on a website jamesallen.com and found this:

Diamond Details
Item Number: 1087833
Shape: Round
Carat weight: 0.92
Cut: Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: VS1
Certificate: GIA
Depth: 62.4%
Table: 56%
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: Thin
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.22*6.28*3.90

I need to know what I am looking for as to what specifications would make a pretty diamond for the ring. I know quality wise it''s where I want to be, but the depth, table, girdle, measurements etc....I am clueless about and it seems like no matter how much I search for information I still get lost.

I know it''ll be pretty eithe way, but I want to maximize what I can afford and what will look great. I have a budget for the stone in that .90-.93 range or so of about $4200-4700 and that''s it LOL. I''m already over what I think is ok and what SHE thinks is ok, but it is for her and she''s worth it, I just don''t want to feel like I''m ripped off in any way.

Please help!
Chris

Any suggestions/ideas?

Hmmm....

A few thoughts...

1) To your thread's question...Denver Appraiser says to have the person doing the setting be sure the diamond will fit. Rather than having a 3rd agent involved...try to get your diamond place agree to set the diamond in your ring...who might also get for you the ring you want?

2) To buy...try the search by cut DB here, above under Prices. It draws on the wisdom here that the HCA formula, used in the cut advisor, above right under tools, would help you find a better diamond than if you don't use it...

3) as for example the diamond you have found where, if you look at its cert, gets you a 4.7 on the HCA. You want under 2

4) For JA anyway, try these two instead, and pocket the change.

Spunger, Jim...are we optimizing? Well...we're doing better!

The very easiest idea is to buy a WhiteFlash ACA or Expert Selection stone or an ideal cut hearts and arrows stone from Good Old Gold. Both vendors give you a huge amount of information on the stones which you almost don''t need because they have already selected the best stones for you!

Other than that, these are the general parameters I look for:

table 54-57%

depth 60-62%

crown angle 34-35

pav. angle 40.6-41

girdle thin, medium, or slightly thick

It helps a lot if photos and idealscope images are posted, too.
