How big would you guess this EC is?

I know there is no way to say for sure how many carats this is just looking at it and especially not from a picture. I was just wondering about how big you all would guess this is? It's an acquaintance of mine and she swears it's almost 1.5ct but to me it looks like maybe 1ct. The only reason why I'm even asking is because I'm just not sure if my idea of what a 1.5ct EC looks like is way off base or something. Either way, it's very pretty. Her ring size is about a 4.5. Just curious, thanks for your input!

1 ct or smaller! Perhaps she means 1.5 tcw? There's a lot of diamond on the band...could be as much as 0.5-0.7 cts?

The original setting was a yellow gold solitaire and she even said 1.5ct then. It was inherited from her husband's grandmother so I think maybe either he told her that or she just has no clue and guessed. I can see it being 1.5tcw.

well I think EC's and asschers face up smaller than other stones, but even still looks smaller than 1.5

You really never know though, it could be poorly cut and super deep.

I just looked at two 3ct yellow diamonds that looked like they had a 1 ct difference in size.

Around 1 ct, if it's a relatively "normal-ish" EC (whatever "normal" means). For all you know, that stone can have a 79% depth AND a thick girdle. It wouldn't Look like a 1.5 carat from above, but it definitely can be. It's just that all that weight is hiding in the belly and below the surface, where no one can really see it.

Plus, I find older stones (generally round and cushions) look smaller in general compared to recently cut stones. This is because the weight (sometimes) is in a higher crown or deeper depth (giving it a bulgy appearance), which results in a smaller face-up appearance. If this is grandmother's stone, it could very well be hiding that weight but weigh 1.5 carats.

I would guess around 1 carat.

Given her ring size, I'd guess 1 ct or a little less.

Ditto.

Yeah I'm thinking I was probably right in my first impression of it being closer to 1 ct. I would say maybe 1.5ct if it was cut really deep but the diamonds on the band actually run straight across under the diamond and it still sits low so I am pretty positive it isn't deep. Either way, I think it's a very nice size on her small finger. I just wanted to check if I was at all close in my estimation. Thanks for everyone's input!

I really dont think it could be a 1.5 ct, even if it was cut very deep and had a girdle like a tank. I have a 4.5 and have tried on many EC's in this size range (not all well cut) and get much larger finger coverage. I would guess 1ct or smaller.

I'm wearing a 1.2ct EC on my 4.5 finger at the moment and the stone in the photo definitely faces up smaller. That said, depth is key - who knows, maybe that one is super-deep? But using my own stone as a comparator (~64% depth) I would say that that stone faces at around 1ct or a touch smaller.

Guess it's already been decided, but would still like to put in my $0.02 cents ::)

I very quickly took a picture of my EC at work since her stats are so close to mine (Sorry, it's blurry). I have similar size fingers as well as similar carat size (1.53). Using that comparison, I'd definitely guess the same, that it's smaller than a 1.5 even if it was super deep.

i used to have an emerald and i'd say... anywhere from 1 carat to 1.2?

it definitely looks at least 1 carat.

On her small hand I would have guessed .75 with another .75 side stones.

Thanks for the picture comparison Cinna. Your ring is beautiful! Judging by that I think it's more and more likely that it's around 1ct.

I believe a size 4.5 ring has an inside diameter of 15.27mm or so.

After zooming (to 250%) and rotating the image (I think 5 degrees clockwise), I have the inside diameter around 127 pixels.

With that conversion factor (127px = 15.27mm), and measuring the diamond at 45px x 56px, my best guess is that the diamond measures about 5.41mm x 6.73mm.

I guess it could possibly be a little over 1ct (though my eyes tell me that's generous). It's entirely possible that I did a poor job of measuring, so take it with a grain of salt.
