I have been lurking and searching for the last six months, trying to learn as much as possible. It is easy to get caught up in all of the different aspects of size, cut, color, clarity, symmetry, flouresence, polish, girdle, culet, different certs, brillance/fire/idealscope, spread, brillance, fire, scintillation, leakage, computer models, angle measurement, H&A... not to mention the diamond market and prices for various stones.

I remember reading that the loose diamond market is a perfect market economy: Given a stone''s parameters, there is one given price for that stone. Although it sounds good in theory, it doesn''t match with reality at all. First of all, one of the key requirements for a market economy is low barrier to entry, which is most definitely not the case in the diamond industry. The second important point is that every seller has a different way of weighing different aspects of a stone. It is true that the price moreorless varies with the major, universally-acknowledged indicators of color, clarity, and carat weight. But other aspects like cut are more subjective. I''ve seen a 20% price difference between two AGS0-cut stones with moreorless equivalent specs from the same seller! There were aspects to the individual stones that made them worth different amounts in the eyes of the seller. So it can take a long time and a lot of effort to find the best deal on a stone with your parameters.

Anyway, enough with the rant! I think I''ve finally narrowed down my search to one stone. I''ve asked the person who will be wearing it what are the most important criteria, and she said "size, size, and size". /idealbb/images/smilies/rodent.gif Originally I was thinking 1.3c G-VS2, but now I''m looking at 2.04 J-SI2!

2.04 J-SI2

AGS000 H&A

8.23x8.24x5mm

Table-56% Depth-60.8% Crown-34.8 Pavilion-40.9

Crown-15.2% Pavilion-43.1%, Girdle-1.2 to 1.7%, Culet-Pointed.

HCA score: 1.6 TIC

Price- $9500

Here is (my) analysis of the cut:

And here is the actual idealscope image:

Finally, here is the image of the diamond showing the inclusions:

There are a few clouds here and there, along with a line of needles under the crown facets on the right side.

Any comments? Do you think this stone would work in a platinum tiffany 6-prong? My girlfriends ring size is 2 3/4, so this stone should look pretty monsterous. (Not as big as the 3ct on a 2.5 ring size that someone just posted, but I don''t have a 3ct budget /idealbb/images/smilies/loopy.gif.

Sweet.

The tiffany-style six-prong is my fave setting, so I'm biased...but yes, I think the stone will look terrific in that setting.

Seems like you've done your homework and know what you want. I'd go for it.

Very pretty!
Beautiful cut and it looks incredibly clean for an SI 2. The Idealscope image is sweeeeeet.

joeq,

Very nice diamond and at a very good price. I think your choice of a 6 prong Tiffany style setting will look exceptional.

Now for this ring size of 2 3/4 - are you sure of the ring size ? Seems awfully small.

Hi joeq,
The diamond looks great(very clean SI2) and the price is right as well. !! I would like to see pictures of the diamond after you get it mounted.
Did you get it from an on line seller??

Good Luck
Hunter
ps Check her ring size?

Thanks for the comments.

Yes, her ring size IS 2 3/4. (Her ring won't even slip past the base of my fingernail on my pinky finger!) And it is going to have to be tight because the stone is so heavy, the ring will rotate unless it is snug to her finger. She is built like a runway model: 5'8" 100lbs, so her whole body is thin, not just her hands. (I feel incredibly lucky, but the downside is that her taste for designer clothing is getting expensive

.)

The only thing I am worried about is the combination of platinum setting, J color, and large stone - I'm afraid that the yellow color will show up through the large table and pavilion and contrast with the white platinum. And especially if the stone is dirty, the cut won't shine nearly as much.

I'll post pictures as soon as I get them...
