After much deliberation, I decided to remove my umbalite garnet from the LOGR ring setting in hopes of pairing it with my latest Tanga garnet in earrings. Once unset, the size difference was much more noticeable, and the Umbalite was actually smaller in mm size than I had in my records (yeah, I keep a spreadsheet ). Here are the loose stones together:
Now I was worried that the size difference would be a real issue. Anyone who knows me, knows my penchant for diamond halos, but putting these stones in a round halo might simply spotlight the difference, rather than hide it. But by stroke of good luck, I happened to find some settings at a NYC vendor. We had already spent over an hour at their counter, made purchases (I bought the ring setting for my Mahenge spinel from them, and AllisonD got an amazing setting for her afghan tourmaline), and I think it finally dawned on them that we were serious gemstone freaks. Since I was looking for earring settings, they started bringing out a few pieces that were tucked away in a locked cabinet, and I saw these:
