So, I thought I'd post an update to my previous thread on Gene's Tanga garnet: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-tanga-garnet-and-pink-tourmalines.149203/

After much deliberation, I decided to remove my umbalite garnet from the LOGR ring setting in hopes of pairing it with my latest Tanga garnet in earrings. Once unset, the size difference was much more noticeable, and the Umbalite was actually smaller in mm size than I had in my records (yeah, I keep a spreadsheet :ugeek: ). Here are the loose stones together:

Now I was worried that the size difference would be a real issue. Anyone who knows me, knows my penchant for diamond halos, but putting these stones in a round halo might simply spotlight the difference, rather than hide it. But by stroke of good luck, I happened to find some settings at a NYC vendor. We had already spent over an hour at their counter, made purchases (I bought the ring setting for my Mahenge spinel from them, and AllisonD got an amazing setting for her afghan tourmaline), and I think it finally dawned on them that we were serious gemstone freaks. Since I was looking for earring settings, they started bringing out a few pieces that were tucked away in a locked cabinet, and I saw these:

I am so jealous of your NYC settings. Seeing you post picture after picture of amazing settings at good prices is making me envious and jealous. :))

This actually made me chuckle a little because you have some stunning settings and stones yourself! But you know, if you ever get a chance, you should go - you have to do some digging, but it can be loads of fun, especially if you go with a good friend. Gems, window shopping, and a NY slice - what could be better?!

I'm normally not a huge halo fan, but I LOVE those settings. Those are going to be spectacular earrings.

Thanks, Liane, I appreciate your very kind comments. I did toss around non-halo ideas, but they're too big to use as studs, and while plain, basket-set danglies would be very striking, I'm afraid the color would get lost against my dark hair. So what could I do?! lol :naughty:

I'll just post a couple more pics for now, but will be back later to add more.

Cellentani, I absolutely love your engagement ring! The design is amazing, it's one of my PS favorites. Your garnets are beautiful and the settings are perfect. You take lovely pictures too. :))

These earrings are going to be show stoppers! The settings are gorgeous, and the stones are delectable: like very large, lush raspberries. Yummy.

Cellantini - you are KILLING me here!

I have a credit on AA for a flight I need to take before July . . . hmmmmm, would you and Allison meet me to play if I flew back out there? :Up_to_something:

They are going to look AMAZING! And I do adore your engagement ring, I don't know how I've never seen it before.

YES! Of course! lol

The color of those garnets are fannntassticc! I have two oec diamonds that aren't the same size and it's pretty hard to tell when I have them in but a little more noticeable when they are out.

Hey, sorry everyone for going MIA - life got busy all of a sudden! :o

Burberrygirl, I'm very flattered by your comments on my e-ring - honestly, they made my day!

Aoife, thank you! I can't wait to get these set!

Lauren, I'm so glad Allison spoke up in my absence - I know we'd have a blast!

Hi treenbean - glad you like the garnets! Do you have pics or a thread on your OECs? I'm in love with that cut!

I'd meant to post more pics earlier - better late than never, I guess. Anyway, I'd mentioned before that I'd also gotten a setting for my spinel. Most of you have probably already seen that thread, but here's another pic:

I can't resist posting a pic of Allison's unbelievable Afghan tourmaline. She'd initially planned on setting this gorgeous asscher with side traps, but given the size of the tourmaline, they would have needed to be fairly substantial. When her stone fit perfectly in this setting, it was just too good to pass up!

Thanks Fly Girl! And I agree, Allison's tourmaline is stunning - even more so in person! Have any projects you're working on?

I've been playing with pearls recently. I have some pictures of a baroque pearl in the Sea of Cortez thread and I am taking in a 7 ct aquamarine from Dana at Mastercut gems for possible setting into a pearl bracelet. See the Princess Diana bracelet thread in Pearls. Also, just picked up the coral cabochons Dana listed on his website for setting as earrings. I'll post a picture in the Catch All thread.

Love your projects. I was in New York City for a meeting last month, but unfortunately did not have time for jewelry shopping. That is probably a good thing for my wallet. I love the city. It is great fun to visit. We were staying at the Hilton on Avenue of the Americas, so I got in lots of walking to go see Broadway plays. Those of you who get into New York more often are the envy of many of us.

Sorry to drag up an old topic, but what was the NY store where you got the settings? I just purchased some loose gemstones and am trying to find some pre-made earring halos!

i think your round stones will be just fine in the setting....as earrings no one is going to notice the rounds aren't the exact same size.....that's part of the joy of having earrings made, i think! because the stones are on opposite sides of your face they just aren't going to be viewed in the same way as a ring. you're going to really enjoy them!

HI:

Yes, please share. I am spending $$$$ on custom work when I am not sure I always need to....I suppose the stones have to be perfectly calibrated tho for stock mountings...

cheers--Sharon

Oh my stars! Those earrings are going to be lovely!

I have no idea how I missed this thread first time round.

Just wanted to add that I have serious amounts of setting envy going on here. Cell, you have THE BEST taste and I simply adore your pieces - always have! BTW Allison's Afghan is breathtaking.

I'm so pleased this thread came back again - lustworthy jewels.

oh oh oh!!!   Those earrings are TDF!!! :appl: :appl: :appl:
wow - please do post where they were found - I am not a "dangly" person normally... but I sense a change in my thinking suddenly!!!

I agree - I'm jealous of the lucky PSers who live in NYC - - - mind you, the temptation would be too much for me to resist, so I guess I'm best NOT being close to that mecca of all that is sparkly and wonderful!!!

Wow, thanks everyone for your generous compliments! It's been over a year since I've had those earrings set, and IIRC, they were just from one of the many shops in the Diamond District - I'm not local to that area (or state, even), so when I manage to get up there, it's a bit of a whirlwind. Funny this thread should pop up - I'd just taken them out because they need a bit of adjusting in the prongs, but you can see them finally set in the photo.

Canuk-gal, you had posted on another photo of mine in the Cmas thread - I haven't forgotten, my friend, and I'll start a thread on those pieces soon. By the way, I had the lovely opportunity to see mutual friend of ours in the Big Apple recently - you should come with her next time, as I'd love to meet you!
