If I had found a diamond to enter in this chart to figure out what I''m getting. Whats the best scenario worth it. I came across a few at IDEAL''s and most are 50/50 half excellent half very good. What areas should equal excellent and what can get away with very good.

ie:
Light return EX EX VG EX
Fire EX VG VG EX
Scint VG VG VG EX
Spread VG VG VG VG and so on.

What would be the best combination for a pendant. If this varies, than what would be the best ratio, ie. 2.3-2.5, 1.4-1.6 and so on. Yes it is only a pendant, but I do want to get my moneys worth. sizes I''m interested in
.47-.50 maybe even a .46.

You will se that most diamonds with top scores get "VG" for spread - I would not worry allot about that, since it is rather easy to compare the diameter of diamonds available on your list - the HCA does not take into account those numbers directly (since you are not asked to input diameter) so "VG" there doesn't mean that you really have a stone that is smaller than it's peers of same size.

There are not too many pieces with all the stats in place and far from traditional ideal proportions. A mix of Vg and Ex is the usual sight for a stone already graded for cut (how many AGS5 do you see?).

It's nice to hear "excellent" but this does not mean that "very good" corresponds to a worse diamond - the numbers that the HCA takes into account do not make a complete description of a diamonds - just a good approximation.

It seems more likely to find an EGL certified piece with numbers available for the HCA test getting some more "colorful" score open to interpretation. Provided such a piece makes a good deal, I would want light return to stay Ex/Vg and allow scintillation to go down to "Good" for a ~0.5cts pendant stone. A pendant is not shadowed much when worn and will show it's flash when moved.

Just my 0.2, of course.
