I found this in a B&M store and tracked down the cert. Please give your opinion. It comes set in paladium , but we found a great setting for a very good price.

http://gemfacts.com/Cert/Default.aspx TIA!!!!!!

Your link just goes to the GCAL certificate look up page, not a specific one.

Nothing in the link. Need the report number.

sorry thecert number is 182740072 . If you could look and tll me what you tink. Thanks!

Numbers look good to me.

Thanks, do you think 4400 is a good deal for this? The metal is worth nothing at all ( palladium) .

Not really that great of a price unless it also have a GIA/AGS report. Not sure how much discount is given by the trade to a GCAL report or if it is highly regarded.

I dont think there is a GI or any other report . The store lost the original copy so they tracked it down and this is how I was able to veiw it online. The are getting a dupe copy of the cert. I dont know if we can find anything cheaper for the quality.

Hi, could you please tell me why you dont think it is a good value?

sorry to be a pain, but anyone?

Because I do not know how consistent is GCAL's clarity/color grading. In the diamond biz, AGS/GIA report will command a better premium and for only a price of about 100-150 USD, so when someone sends a stone to another lab, or do in-house grading, it usually means they do not think it will as good a grade with a GIA/AGS grading.

I see, thanks. So if this was the same stone with the same specs and a GIA , it is more valuable. That sucks

Apparently GCAL''s colour and clarity grading is reliable according to one of our experts, not sure on the cut grading.

You can ask that it be check out with an independent appraiser of your choosing or have it send to GIA for grading and if it checks out you buy the stone and pay for the grading cost?

Well as it is B&M, I am buying the whole ring and not just the stone and no returns, so that isnt possible. The sales assistant is in nyc getting the cert for me and I am supposed to pick up the ring tomarrow and buy another setting. Im just stressed and trying to fit a budget. I need more options.

Something is fishy here. No returns is just not right. Why is asking the vendor to send the stone to GIA not possible, unless they have something to hide?

No returns for me means NO SALE!!!! If the store is not willing to stand behind their product, that is a huge warning sign. I would pass on this and look at some more reliable vendors.

Would you be willing to purchase online from one of the outstanding PS vendors? Depending on your location, you might even be close enough to visit some of them in person--many have storefronts or see customers by appointment in addition to their online sales.

There are many here on PS that would enjoy helping you find just the right diamond and setting. You would just need to let us know what your requirements for diamond and setting are and a budget.

Its a national chain that is going out of bizz and its on final sale. 50% off plus 15 %. Im lucky to get the cert they said. the liquidators just want the merc gone. Its BBB, btw.

OK, but you can get a similar diamond that is GIA/AGS graded from a PS vendor for a similar price, with a 30 day return period and the confidence that they will still be in business to take care of you down the road. The 50 plus 15 equalling everyday pricing from another vendor means they were just way overpriced to begin with.

Ditto.

I agree with you. I dont know why I am scared of online. I know its safe and better value/quality. I guess its not having it in my hand. Instand gratification kind of thing to look at right away. I did a search for my same specs as this ring and most were the same price, maybe one or 2 under the 4400. Please help me to undertand the imporrance of GIA and the like. I have learned so much already from all of you about cut etc . The grading I dont quite grasp yet. Is it for resale value later, or just that some graders are too lenient on thier standards?

A little of both. A diamond with a GIA grading report may be able to be sold later for 50% of it's original retail value (yes, diamonds are NOT a good investment), while one with a report from a "lesser" lab will only be able to be resold for maybe 30% or so of retail. This is a result of the second part. GIA really sets the standard for grading color and clarity. Since this is done by human eyes, it can be somewhat subjective. There are many cases of diamonds graded by one lab being submitted to GIA and receiving a color or clarity grade up to two levels worse. For instance, if you purchased a stone that was claimed to be a G VS2 and paid that price, then submitted it to GIA and it came back as a I SI1, you have drastically reduced its value. What happens is that the marketplace takes this into consideration when pricing diamonds and will price a G VS2 from a lab with a poor reputation similary to a I SI1 from GIA.

You might read this artcle to help explain, as well. http://grading.pricescope.com/

Well if you could give me some places I could look for a GIA cert diamond from somewhere that I will be able to get the 30 day return policy that would be near or around the philadelphia area that would be great. Thanks for everyones imput.

Jet, thank you so much for that info. The sales person said all grading is the same , as when we just called and asked if it could be GIA cert. So i am turned off of Bailey banks and biddle now, as they were acting like the grading report was not important and I shouldnt be concerned with it.

Lots of PS vendors around in NYC. JA also has a store outside of D.C. They usually will require appointments.

Well a trip to NYC is needed then. Its about an hour and a half and I would feel better looking and buying in person. I could make an appointment and let them know my specs and have some stones ready. Now is there a list of NYC PS vendors? TIA! You all "rock"

You are welcome. Unfortunately, that attitude comes out from a lot of retailers. If they were that confident in their goods, it wouldn''t be an issue to submit the diamonds to GIA for reliable grading and pass the cost on to the consumers.

If you are up to a trip to NYC, as Stone cold mentions, Excel Diamonds, James Allen, Engagement Rings Direct and ID Jewelry have offices in the diamond district and Good Old Gold in on Long Island. Any would be glad to assist you. I am not familiar with jewelers in Philly, but there are many PSers that live in the area. You might start a new thread with a title like "Looking for jeweler recommendations in Philadelphia" in order to catch their attention and see what responses you get.
