Hi, I am a first time poster, but I have already read a ton here. I am fascinated all the research I have done, and have been amazed by the amount of knowledge here and the willingness with which it is shared. Personally, I am just now starting to seriously begin looking at engagement ring options for my girlfriend, and I have a few questions I was wondering if someone could answer.
I would love to have a Mark Morrell setting crafted for me, either the Sunburst or the Flame, I have not decided which I like best. I was thinking of setting an old European cut diamond in it. How do you think this will look? I love the look of these old diamonds, especially a stone like Facetfire''s. Sizewise, I am looking at a .75-.9 carat diamond. My girlfriend does not want a large stone. I also want the diamond to be eyeclean with a color above I or J. That leaves cut.
The first thing I learned here is that cut is most important. The science of evaluating cut is amazing to me: all the parameters that can be defined (table%, depth%, ect.) the hearts and arrows viewing, everything. For a round brilliant diamond it seems easy to evaluate cut.
The problem is that it is much harder to evaluate cut in an oec diamond. First of all, the dimensions wildly vary from stone to stone, and second, the old stones are more rare and not as scientifically cut. I know Oldminer has a published chart for evaluating oec diamonds, but it seems a little strange to me. If I am not mistaken, from the chart a well cut oec diamond will have a table of 50-57% and a depth of 40-44%. I buy the table numbers, but the depth numbers seem off to me. Nearly all the diamonds I have looked at, even some of the more beautiful ones, have depth percentages in the 60''s. Which is right? What are well-cut oec diamonds shaped like? Without having much real-life experience with diamonds, my knowledge of diamonds is limited to what I see here and I would like to have a fairly good idea of what is out there.
Whiteflash, if I am not mistaken, is in Houston, reasonably close to where I live. Can they source old European cuts for me? I think viewing oec side by side to modern cuts would be enlightening. If you are from Whiteflash, or just somebody who knows, please help. I have already contacted antiqueengagementrings, oldworlddiamonds, and I think I will write singlestone as well, but I have heard great things about Whiteflash, and their proximity is appealing. Any suggestions about diamond vendors?
Again, thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge with me. This is very exciting, but it is a lot to take in at times. Thanks and God bless!
