Hello!
If you''ve made it this far, perhaps you can be of assistance to me!...

I am going shopping on the weekend to look at appliances for our new house (move in in august, yay!), and a tv for the bf (so i kinda jokingly mentioned that if he''s gonna look at big screen tv''s, i should get to look at my drooling equivalent... erings lol, so he was like ok fine sure)... not very romantinc LOL but sometimes u gotta do what u gotta do. ;)

I know absolutely nothing about jewellery! I mean ive been reading and doing some research and have some ideas, but I am a complete noob to the entire process and for some reason the whole process stresses me out (I swear i was less stressed buying the house for some reason!!). ... I kid you not i have never purchased jewellery before.... i own 3 rings, one being from one grandmother, the other one being from the other grandmother, and the 3rd being a wedding band that my dad had purchased for someone (who was not my mother!!) back in the 1970''s LOL that i''ll sometimes wear on my right hand... oh i also own 2 necklaces that were gifts and one pair of earings that i nearly lost at work last week!! (found the missing earing on the hospital floor 2 minutes before the end of my shift yay!!!) ... oh and i also inherited a bracelet that my father purchased for my mother, but she didn''t like it!! I always thought it was mean to tell ur spouse u dont like something, i think its a really nice bracelet lol... and its fun to explain why your bracelet has the letter "G" on it, even though your name does not start with the letter G, or end in the letter G, or have a G in it Lol...

But i digress, as i tend to do... but anyway, you get the picture....

I kid you not i have stepped foot into a real jewellery store perhaps 2-3 times in my entire life!!... A few months ago, we did go into a couple of jewellery stores and didn''t really get far beyond looking at 1 or 2 rings and having my finger sized Lol... (which i no longer remember LOL). I actually broke out into a sweat!!! I look forward to having a ring, but the process really stresses me out..
I just imagine the sales people being pushy or maybe more likely snobby... I have read stories about people saying they didnt get respect because of the way they are dressed ??? pff, i''m the type that would wear jogging pants to go shopping but im fighting hard the urge to do so... !

Anyway, we thought we would start off at the local mall just to try on stuff in person to get an idea of likes and dislikes, and also a baseline comparison for price, etc... How do you approach these people... ? I really suck at social pointless banter and tend to be too blunt for my own good LOL ANd i''m definitely not the haggling type but i hear a lot of comments to that effect as well?? ... one last detail im extremely cheap LOL (i mean, im not poor or anything, just prefer to put the money elsewhere, im thinking .25- 0.4 center stone... the only part that makes me uncomfortable is the sales person reaction... because i remmember trying on a ring a few months ago that i thought was nice, and being like "hmm its nice but a little more than i would like to spend"... so the lady was like "oh, umm, we can set a diamond that will fit your umm , budget"... from that point on she immediately treated me like i wasn''t serious and it all kinda fell apart from there and i was like f%^k it ...lol... i sure dont want to go through that again... but im thinking after doing it a couple of times at a couple of stores perhaps it''ll get easier?...

Another odd question, is it common to ask for like say a substitution? I wouldn''t go as far as to call it custom design, but I would like to find a ring model that has a few little side stones and instead of them being all white diamonds, have a couple of them be brown diamonds and/or saphires.... ? I presume the person at the store will judge me for wanting a ring with blue and brown in it, but that being said, is it something that can commonly be done at like a mall jewellery store?

And last but not least, if any of you are in the Montreal area, where have you gone and had positive experiences? :) (weither it be in a mall, or an independently owned place, etc.)... or can u do those kind of substitutions on the web... because i''ve seen nice rings and settings online, but none with blue AND brown in them... ?

Thanks, from one fluffy and erratic nursey

I would suggest you do what I (and many here) have done... look at diamond shapes and sizes and the settings at your local stores to get an idea of what you like on your finger, continue to read/research on Pricescope, then when you''re ready to buy let the Pricescope community help you find a great diamond/setting. You can get a much better diamond at a much better price by purchasing from a trusted PS vendor- I know I did (I purchased my stone from Good Old Gold -can''t recommend them enough- and Maytal Hannah is almost finished with my setting- yay!)

I agree with Sera. Many of us love to help you shop. Have fun scoping out what you like this weekend.

DITTO. Please don't get sucked into buying at the mall (or MAUL as we call it here for good reason).

maul... scary?? ... my cousin that got engaged last year as well as 2 coworkers purchased their respective rings from the mall i'm gonna look at (at different stores in the mall though), and they both report being happy with their purchases, but admitedly i didnt ask full 100% details...

and thanks for the well wishes, indeed this "should" be something fun... something ive been waiting for for oh i'd say about the last year now lol (or definitely since purchasing the house a few months ago lol)... but leave it to me to turn something that is supposed to be fun into a worry fest :P

The thing is... you can go to the maul and see some diamonds that do sparkle. Keep in mind you can also purchase glitter nailpolish that sparkles. In the jewelry store they will be super clean and under their lights- enhancing the sparkle that may not match IRL. So sure, they might sparkle... BUT (and that''s a big but!) if you compare a typical maul stone to one purchased form Whiteflash or Good Old Gold... that little sbit of maul sparkle is going to look quite dull compared with an excellent, stunning, fiery, bright, scintillating stone from WF or GOG. A maul store may slap an "ideal" label on their stone... but understand it may be "the most ideal out of their mediocre inventory." If you want a great stone, put CUT as your first priority.

Whatever you do do not purchase at the MAUL because the prices are at least 2x to 4x more than what you need to pay. If the deal is too good to be true, there is something they are not telling you or item is being misrepresented.

I shopped for a ring for the first time 3 months ago and I went everywhere even Robbins Bros. The mark up was SHAMELESS

. You need to figure out which styles you like at the MAULS then do your research here to find a vendor that has what you are looking for.
