Help with spinel please

Is it possible to etch on a black spinel mesa? It's a big stone but has some damage and I wanted to try and etch the surface for interest. Is this a horrible idea? It's not pretty as is so not much value. It's cushion cut abt 10ctw. Similar to the attached - not my image. Thanks,

I'm sure it's feasible but I'm not sure who would or could do it. Google "spinel intaglio." I see this example that I infer is a lab spinel -- but, as a "class ring," it could be some other fairly hard stone:
