I''ve been lurking here trying to educate myself and looking for a while. After searching forever for a ring both online and in a store I found the one I want to buy last night so then came the diamond selection. I''m just this side of clueless but in the end went with a "cheaper" (I use that term loosly) stone because to me I thought it looked better. It was a toss up in the end between 2 1 carats, one G color VS1 and this one, SI1 D color. I''m no expert but the only inclusion on the SI1 was a single tiny spot that took (with the help of the jewler) me a long time to find with the loop. I tried going for a good cut and Table/depth that I thought was pretty good. I thought the cheaper one sparkled more in natural light and it was $900 less than the VS1 stone. I realize personal preference is what wins in the end but I would just like to make sure I''m getting a fair deal on a good quality stone. It''s on hold, I''m having it set in 14K white gold setting with 2 .5 carot SI1 D color side stones. Here are the specs, can I get some opinions? Thanks for helping the newbie!!

Welcome to PS.

If you have seen it and love it then that is the main thing. It isn't a top cut from the info given, but it might look bright and attractive! It is also facing up slightly small for it's weight, a 1 ct should measure about 6.5mm. Cutters often try to hit certain weights such as 1ct, 1.5 cts etc as there are price jumps accordingly. If you want a better cut and performance then you could do better and keep looking unless you want to stick to what you have. A D colour carries a premium, you could drop the colour and still have a white diamond, to perhaps an H as a good middle ground perhaps. I would check out the very thin part of the girdle to make sure that it isn't a durabilty issue, although this might only be a small variation. Also check the location of the feather too. It isn't always the case, but occasionally if these break the surface or are near the girdle, then they could be a possible durability issue too. You don't mention the price? If it is in a store, chances are it is more money than online. If you are decided on this rock, see if you can check it out in different lights to see how it looks in daylight etc, also if you could get your hands on an Idealscope that would be helpful. https://www.pricescope.com/idealscope_indx.asp Have you looked online? Many vendors have lots of info to make choosing a well cut diamond easy, cut is the most important part of a diamond's beauty!

Check out this one as an example of a well cut diamond available online.

Thank you for the reply, I should have added the price is $6400 for the stone. The store does not negotiate pricing which is one thing I liked. There was no pressure, it was here are the stones, the prices are set, and they answered all my questions. It was actaully the jewler that said in the end when I narrowed it down to 2 stones if I didn''t pick the cheaper one he was going to say something because they thought for the money it was a better deal. I think the price is about $500 more than online which I will accept, I prefer to buy from a store. I completely understand what you are saying in regards to I need to buy what I like and agree. I guess I just want to make sure I''m getting treated fair. THANK YOU for the help.

You are welcome! Buying online isn''t for everyone and you have to do what you think is best. As you have seen the diamond and love it that is the main thing! Post pics when you get it!
