Hi all,

I am looking at buying a diamond to make a solitaire diamond ring. I would love to buy a 2ct diamond but that’s just above my budget at the moment.

I am thinking to buy a diamond bigger than 1ct but lower than 2ct. is there a recommendation on which size is a good size in this range? I was trying to figure out at what size does the price spikes.I was thinking if in the future when I am ready for a 2ct or bigger ring I can convert this diamond to a pendant and get another one for ring.

As for the color and clarity, I would prefer an E with VS1. I currently own 2ct diamond studs (1ct each) F VS1.

I would like to hear your opinions.

thank you in advance

I would consider D&E VS-SI1; IMHO IF-VS2 simply means 'never mind clarity characteristics', SI1 and 2 say 'take a look'. Over the last few months I have noticed silly discountsfor fluorescence in the GIA colourless D-F range, even for GIA 'Medium' & certainly allot for 'Strong'; so these options may be interesting - the blue is at least worth seeing, obviously beautiful.

All in all, I would set a searchfor D,E IF-SI1 any fluorescence, > 1.8 carats, < budget & see what comes in; allot of rounds seem well cut these days, if perfection is provided by specialists only [what else is new!].

I have a 2.01, E, SI2. With that said, you need to be discerning on the SI2s, but I got a great one. Eye clean, no “peppering”, none of the “scary” inclusions one wants to steer clear of. So give it a chance. At minimum, save some $ by going with SI1 and put that $ toward the other C’s. I personally would not get anything more than Faint fluorescence in a colorless diamond. If you stay below the 2 ct weight you avoid the big jump in per carat price. So as to size, get the largest you can under 2 ct in something eye clean with no inclusions of concern and the highest color grade that fits (or largest size... this will be where you have to decide what’s more important to you). On that note, for me as example, I would take something smaller with F color (or better) than something a little larger in a G. That’s just me, you need to do what you feel comfortable with. Also, some of the vendors recommended on PS have excellent upgrade policies so you could get what you can afford now, and then upgrade later If you so choose. I will make another comment about color... even if the stone is smaller, the brightness element from the colorless stone has impact. A “white” diamond is noticeable from across the room vs something larger but “darker”. Obviously you won’t be looking at your own ring from across the room lol, but I’m just trying to give you some things to consider. Almost a year ago I did a huge downsize (3.29 ct to 2.01 ct... 9.59 mm to 8.01 mm) so I could go way up in color (I to E). I have not regretted it for even a second. I just had dinner last night with a longtime friend and her son recently got engaged. She accompanied him on the purchase of the ring and she specifically mentioned how her son had to choose between the finer yet smaller stone or something larger. Only you can make the decision of what’s right for you. If you feel even somewhat certain this will not be your last diamond, look to one of the vendors that offers a great upgrade policy. Good luck, I will be eager to read about your choice!

I went from a pretty large ering (first marriage) to a smaller/average ering the second time around.
My first ering was I SI-2. Cut was “good.” It was a beautiful cushion. I got far more (way more!) compliments on that stone than my current 1 carat. That’s due to its size. This stone is a K but has SF so it looks brighter and it’s Ex/Ex/Ex. Far superior better cut. Leaps and bounds better. The smaller stone has far more fire and scintillation. Yet doesn’t get the compliments. So my point is, how big would you like your diamond? Which of the 4 Cs is important to you? First time around I was all about the carat size. This time it was more about the cut. Also, depending on your finger size the diamond can appear bigger. It seems you are color sensitive and would also like a bigger stone? I don’t need D-F, but that’s a personal preference. If you’d like a 2 carat but the budget may not allow go lower in color if you can. Only if you feel comfortable in doing so. Also, I love 1.50 and even around 1.75. For me, I’d be totally okay with G-H SI1. Again, personal preference. And focus on the cut. GL!
