I need help with diamond fluorescence. I want to buy a diamond with the following characteristics:

1.5ct
vvs2 or better
D, E, F color
excellent cut, polish and symmetry

If I buy a diamond with the above characteristics and "strong fluorescence" will it appear to be cloudy or milky? From what I've read, it's mixed reviews. A similar diamond with "none fluorescence" is a few thousand dollars more.

Please let me know what all of you think about fluorescence and how it looks on a diamond with the characteristics I listed.

all opinions welcome :twirl:

You will need to have the stone evaluated, but only a very small fraction of stones with flourescence are negatively impacted by it. It's best to have a gemologist review it for you.

2nd getting a professional opinion.

That said, I have a D with SB fluor and I personally love the effect!

Can you describe how your diamond looks in sunlight? Does it actually look blue tinted? Are there any times when you think it looks hazy?

I have an H with M-SB and RARELY does it look "blue" from the fluor in sunlight, mostly any blue is from reflection of the sky. I have never noticed a haze or oily anything in my stone.

Each diamond is individual. I've had some that did and others that didn't. It would need to be seen to tell you.

I have a G with SBF and I love it!

Here is the best example of the effect of blue fl. on a diamond in pictures and video...yummmm!

According to Jon at GOG, 99% of diamonds with fl. are not hazy or milky.

You have to talk to the dealer about your particular stone to make sure it is not hazy, but most love a diamond with fl....it is not a bad thing and very desirable to those who are knowledgeable about fl. I would love a diamond with strong blue fl.

There are different colors of fl. though...white, blue, yellow, red etc...interesting. If it is white fl. the report will state "medium fl." etc. but if the fl. is a color they will state the color of the fl. in the report.

There are other things such as graining that can cause some haziness in certain lighting ...as I understand it but I will leave those issues to others with more knowledge than myself.

Good luck on your search.

that blue fluro diamond is awesome... awesome... i personally think the fluro looks better in that video than icy white ones...

I  fluo! It looks so scifi!!

Hey,

I have a F colour diamond with very strong blue fluorescence. It is not hazy/milky at all! It goes a lavender colour under direct sunlight but personally I love the effect, and is one of the main reasons I choose it.

As long as it's not causing hazy or milkiness I prefer stones with Florescence. And an appraisal or the vendor (if they are a good one and can get the stone in and c check it out) can tell you about that.

Hi Willay,

Just out of curiosity, what are your reasons for getting a diamond with strong fluor (blue I suppose?)

If I was getting a diamond high in color (i-k) I'd probably want to have a diamond with at least a little fluorescence to offset the yellow tint of the diamond. otherwise I think I would try to avoid buying a stone with anything more than faint fluorescence.
