Hi youcfer and welcome!

Lets take a look for you...

The first might be ok but I personally wouldn't want to buy it without an Idealscope image as it is possible that the angle combo might lead to light leakage. The girdle is on the thick side also and the diamond is facing up a little small for the weight.

The second is a decently cut stone but it does have rather a large table so unless you have seen diamonds with that table size and like them, I would suggest keeping table sizes between 54 - 60% thereabouts.

Report check for this diamond as it didn't scan properly on BN.

I think both of those are too risk for me to purchase sight unseen. I think that if you want to shoot for a diamond that is perhaps not a super perfecto by the numbers, then you would benefit from working with a vendor who can provide images and can look at the diamond in person, to make sure that you are getting the best cut within your desired parameters.

I like the one stone posted. Smaller table, and the long lower girdle facets will potenitally help offset the shallow crown angle.

Thanks for the replies!

Been trolling around diamond forums for the past 6 months and still am a bit lost.

Can you guys let me know what is a good stone "by the numbers" (depth, girdle etc?)

Thanks

Go play with the cut adviser.

https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

Keep the score below 2 and within GIA Ex/AGS Ideal boundary, then you are relatively safe. But still get an idealscope image, the HCA is just a rejection tool and the inputs are averaged and rounded.

Certainly, I would use this chart as a guide, bear in mind that diamonds which fall outside these ranges might be perfectly suitable so use as a guide only.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57% - although if you prefer a larger table you can go up to 60% or a little more
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).
