Help with carat to mm sizing!

HI all! I''m beginning my search for a diamond very early but thanks to PS I''ve learned so much. Now I have come out of lurkdom for help.

I''m unsure if there is a strong visual difference going from 1 to 1.25 carats in real life. Because I am on a budget I''d like to know if it is worth it to spend more for the .25 carat. Will I see a visual difference?

If there is no real visual difference between a 1 and 1.25 at what carat weight/mm size will I be able to see a marked change in size, face up?

If possible, could any of you post comparison photos or direct me to threads which have real diamonds to compare? I''m not sure if this will help you in answering my question, but I am trying to decided on the center stone of a three stone ring in terms of proportion and mm size.

I just went thru this shopping for my wife. I was looking at 1, 1.25 and 1.5 ct loose RB diamonds and you can tell the difference. At least I did. You should go to a B&M to judge for yourself. I started out happy with a 1ct then I went to a 1.25 because of the increase in perceived size then my daughter went out with me and I couldn''t go less than a 1.5ct. Glad Christmas was close approaching because I''m sure I would have been in the 3-4ct size range. The great folks arround here call it something like DSd Diamond Size Disease or something like that.

Bottom line is take a look and you''ll have to judge for yourself. Good luck.

mrssalvo you''re amazing! This was exactly something I was looking for in terms of a photo! I''m a size 5 so I feel like my finger is somewhat close to the model''s enough that I can get a good idea of what it would look like.

dmus thanks for the advice. I''m still too chicken, despite the support other ladies have told me on PS. I know I should drag myself off to the B&M stores, but I''m still mustering up the courage! ^_^
