Hi All,

I have a budget of $5,000 and i am looking for a ring. I am looking for a very plain white gold setting and want to spend the money on the stone itself. I would like a round brilliant, at least .9 carat, at least a very good cut, and at least I color, and eye clean. Is my budget reasonable for this request?

Thank you in advance,
Dominick

Yes, you can find what you want for $5k. You can afford to insist on excellent cut GIA XXX, H/I, VS2/Si1, with a HCA of <2. There were several options in your size range of minimum of .9cts. from James Allen, B2C Jewels, and Solomon Bros. generally. Good luck. Come back when you pick a few and ask for comments.

Yes, you can.
I purchased a diamond and ring from James Allen, in March. The diamond had specs very similar to what you are interested in.
My fiance and I are very happy with it.

Specs:

Carat Weight: 0.92 Carats
Color Grade: I
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Needle, Pinpoint
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Table: 57
Depth: 62.0
Crown: 35.0
Pavilion: 40.8
Fluorescence none
Girdle: med to slightly thick 3.5 % (faceted)

The cost of the diamond was roughly $4.8 K, for a VS1, with HCA of 1.8. I consider this to be an amazing diamond, but certainly not a H & A or super ideal cut. You should be able to find something comparable, but somewhat lower in price by going with a VS2 or SI1 stone.

P.S. Many thanks to all of those who post here. I spent weeks lurking, and wound up making a much better selection than I would have, otherwise.

In addition to those two, I would put this one on hold and ask for an idealscope:

And since I don't love any of the JA solitaires, I'd ask them to order this one for you from stuller. It will be under 400.

http://www.stuller.com/products/121855/3233131/?groupId=110433 It's elegant, allows a flush fit wedding band. And the best part? You can order it in the 14kt X1 white gold that never needs plating!

Over all, the stuller setting is what I'd get with one of the above stones.

That is a beautiful ring. The stone you purchased is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks!

Gypsy,

I love the Stuller setting in your link and thanks for the tip on the 14kt XI. I appreciate your help.

I'm so happy! I like that one too!

You are going to get a gorgeous ring! :wavey:

Is there a reason you didn't put the diamonds on hold and ask for an idealscope?

Hi Gypsy,

I am awaiting the images. They said a few days. Thanks for all your help.

Cool beans!

Thank you. I found another one in the link below so it seems that the pricescope search engine isn't reliable, when it comes to the cut rank criteria.

No. that's a crappy stone.
Don't get that.

Hi Gypsy,

I don't plan on getting that one but I wanted to show how it came up in the pricescope search of HSA cut rank of excellent but when I clicked in the cut wasn't excellent. I am awaiting the pricescope of the three you recommended and hope to choose one of them.

Hi Gypsy and All,

Attached are the Idealscopes on the three stones. It appears the 290538 is the best one. Do you agree? In addition, James Allen doesn't offer the Stuller setting. However, they are going to get me a quote on custom making one. if that doesn't work out, do you have another suggestion on how to get this setting and the stone put in?

I really appreciate everyone's help on this board. It is nice to have people who you don't know willing to help out each other.

Hi OP, I prefer fat arrows so I'm inclined to the bottom two, but the images suggest differently? I know it's really hard to take these of images and unless they are in the same shot, it's hard to really compare them. I could be wrong cause I'm learning all this stuff too. If they are similar priced, my guess they are similar quality and it's really up to your personal preference on thin or fat arrows at this point? Maybe my bump will attract other more experienced posters ;)
