First of all, thanks for taking the time to read my post. I'm totally new to this forum and in need of some advice. I'm currently looking for an engagement ring that has an emerald shape diamond in a 3 stone setting. The center stone is obviously the most important and I'm looking at a 1.5+ carat stone. I'm also obviously looking for the best quality diamond set for my budget (between $15k-$18k), but does anyone have any advice on where I should be looking? I've already taken a look at White Flash and Bluenile. Both have decent prices, but I'm leaning towards Bluenile because they're based in Seattle and I'm in Vancouver, Canada.

I know my gf likes this look: http://www.tiffany.ca/Engagement/Item.aspx?GroupSKU=GRP10040#f+0/0/2002/0/0/2002

The closest I can find online is this one from BN: http://www.bluenile.com/ca/step-cut-trapeziod-diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_27486

Also, a question for the ladies mostly... do the side stones really matter that much? I could obviously go the route of putting most of my money towards a nice center stone and have the sides be poorer in quality, but does that make much sense?

Any help from you experts would be much appreciated!

I would contact Jonathan at Good Old Gold in NY. He does very well at finding emerald cut stones. You just can't buy one blind from a drop shipper. Once the center stone has been chosen, then the setting can be determined, but usually you'd select the matching sidestones and then have the ring made. Or, if you went with smaller side stones, you could buy a setting with the sides already there. There is a thread with a setting like that now in Show Me the Bling, but be forewarned that that particular setting is very expensive. I love the look, though!

If you use GOG for the stones, I'd probably recommend you get a Vatche setting because they make them very similar to Tiffany. GOG carries Vatche.

In additon to Good Old Gold, I believe Engagement Rings Direct is good at sourcing well-cut emerald cuts. I agree with Diamondseeker - since you can't get pictures or aset images from Blue Nile, and you can't judge fancies on the numbers, it is very risky to buy a fancy-shaped diamond from them unless you don't care what it looks like or are willing to return it.

I wouldn't buy from blue nile. Engagement Rings Direct would be my first call. My second call would be Perry at Leon Mege. My third call would be to GOG. But it's best to pick one vendor among these (they are all in NYC) and go with that one-- any of them will be able to help you.

And any of these vendors can either make or source a setting for you.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I just checked out GOG and emailed them for more info. From the site alone I don't see how it's different from BN or WF, but I assume they'll be able to send me actual photos of the diamonds when I talk in more detail?

Do you guys know how the return policy works at GOG or at the other sites? The only reason I ask is because I'm planning on proposing during a 2.5 week trip and if things don't work out (god forbid) then I'll need to return it. The only positive I saw with BN aside from price and location was that their return policy was 30 days.

Ask GOG what their return policy is. If you don't like it, contact Mark at ERD and ask him what his is. If none of that works, James Allen has a 60 day return policy and I can help you find stones there if we have to (last resort though since you need three).

GOG and ERD are both known for finding spectacular step cuts. That's the difference. It's not something you could see from the website and something you would have to understand from watching what they have sourced in the past. More important, they have a great track record of finding matched suites for the sidestones, which would be hard through a vendor like JA for example.

Thanks Gypsy. I'm still waiting to hear back from GOG. I've contacted ERD and am waiting for them to call back as well. I'll let you know how it goes!

Follow up both with a separate type of communication.

If you called, follow up with email.
If you emailed, follow up with call. :wavey:

I started my search for emerald 3 stone rings about 2 months ago with James Allen. Service was pretty good but just couldn't find the best performing stone from them.
Gypsy recommended GOG and Mark from ERD. I ended up purchasing from ERD. The reason I went with ERD is due to Marks extensive knowledge and also when I was speaking with GOG I felt they were just looking for a good stone but not searching for the best stone.
Mark at ERD can better explain what is going on in the market with emerald cut stones and I'm sure can find you a great stone.
Good luck!!
Here is a pic of my 3 stone emerald ring:

thanks foe the advice jlt23. I have a call with Mark tomorrow too. Is that the Deleney? Do you mind sharing the details of the ring? You can pm me if you don't want that info to be known to the general public.

After more searching, I really want to find a ring like this one from Harry Winston: http://www.harrywinston.com/store/engagement/diamond-rings-2/products/emerald-cut-three-stone-diamond-ring

I'm obviously not gonna buy a HW ring (I wouldn't be on this forum if I could afford one lol) but something as close to that as possible would be nice.

Thats a beautiful ring by Harry Winston. I like the setting as well. At first I was going to go with a double prong on the center but was advised the single prong looked better, so thats what I went with. I guess if your getting a 2 cart. + center stone, a double prong looks good as opposed to a smaller center stone a double prong setting does not look good due to a smaller center stone

Ring details: Center is a 1.18 G vs1 side stones I believe were .41 G vs1 also
But what makes this ring stand above the rest is the cut and it's light performance.

jlt.... I have a one carat center too and couldn't do double prongs either, as it was overpowering. I think with a 2 carat center double prongs are great though so ilovegoooold should be fine.

ilovegooold: If you want the settings stargurl posted, I would either: buy the stones from Leon and have him do it. I don't trust him with outside stones. Have Steven Kirsch make the ring with outside stones (I do trust him, he used to work with Leon and he made my setting and several others that my friends own), OR have Mark do it because Mark can do both CAD and Hand forged (which is what Leon and Steven do). CAD will be much more affordable, and will still look amazing as you can see from jlt's.
