Hi like most here Im searching for a good diamond to give to my special lady. I have the chance to purchase a stone from a friend that is set in a setting that is of no importance to me. I want to take the stone out and remount. The only cert/appraisal with the stone was provided by the store purchased

. The stores name is "Merry Richards Jewelers" Chicago, Illinios dated 1992 appraised by R Cheng value $8000
The specs listed are not much
Round Brilliant

Measurement 6.39X6.31 XX 3.91 MM -1.00 ct. H color VS1 clarity

From looking at the stone and comparing to other it does have great brillance faces up white and it is very clean in a 10x loop

I can buy this diamond for only $2000 which is why Im asking here before my first impulse gets the best of me.

My questions concern the rep of this dealer and appraisal value etc if anyone is familiar with them and their products also by the measurement does this seem like a true 1ct stone or is that impossible to tell.

It would be nice to save the $150 or so to have it reappraised I can put that mmoney to a better setting but I do not want to get ahead of myself

$150 is well worth the piece of mind, I''d have someone check it out. That being said, who''s charging $150? Is that the going rate?

You didn''t say the shape of the cut. If this is a round brilliant,..............

A well cut 1 carat diamond would have a diameter closer to 6.5mm, as opposed to the 6.39x6.31 you posted. That means the diamond is hiding a bit of weight somewhere. From comparing the dimensions to diamonds currently available on the Price Scope Search Engine, "comparable" diamonds (diamonds with similar diameters, depth, carat weight, H, VS1) currently available from Price Scope Vendors run anywhere from around $3900 to nearly $5000. Pricing is dependent on grading lab, symmetry, polish, and assuming the diamond really is an H, VS1. Based on today''s prices, I would think it is highly unlikely the diamond was reasonably valued at $8000 over 12 years ago. More than likely, the buyer probably received a "feel good" appraisal from the seller.

Sounds like you have seen the diamond, and compared to others you''ve looked at, it has caught your eye. While $2000 may sound like a deal, I would still recommend a current, independent appraisal. Get a professional to do an inspection for you to verify the color, clarity, weight, and condition of the diamond. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money. And you''ll also have accurate information for your insurance company as well.

Thanks yes its a round brilliant I will get the appraisal and post the true specs for comments

take it to an independant appraiser NOT a jewelry store or person who also sells

PQ is correct. The mm should be closer to 6.50. As she mentioned, the diamond is probably deeper than ideal, may have a very thick girdle or both. Also, it may *not* be a full carat.

Though, 2k is a very good price provided it is what it is. Make the sale contingent upon an independent appraisal to cover yourself. Also, since the "receipt/appraisal" is that old, your insurance company may require a new appraisal.

Good luck.

edited to add: I'm leaning towards very thick girdle or shy of a full carat. If it is shy of a full carat, the price may not be so good.

Took the advice had it appraised the stone checked out to be 1 ct VS1 H as the original. Took the stone out of the old setting remounted in new total cost with new 18 kt setting about $2500. Ive enclosed a scan the best I could get to show the completed ring. Thanks for all the help.
